Winter Wedding Guest Dresses – Long Dresses
Let’s start with the kind of outfit that most women would have access to in their wardrobe, feel comfortable wearing, and which is the easiest to put together. I am referring to a dress styled under an outerwear piece. The formula is one but there are plenty of options, which we will explore in this first section.
Long Dress + Long Coat
This is the most straightforward cold weather Winter wedding guest outfit – wear a long dress with long sleeves and layer a coat on top.
The reason being is that a long dress that nearly covers your shoes allows for all the layering you might need, depending on how cold it is. You can wear a light long sleeve thermal underneath, one that has a suitable neckline not to show. You can also wear thermal leggings or tights.
In terms of shoes, I would suggest going for a closed pump, and a half size larger to allow the thickness of the thighs to fit comfortably. Of course, you can also choose to layer sheer nylon socks under your leggings, especially if the feet will be on show, which they will likely will as you walk and lift your dress.
Another shoe tip I’d like to give you, one that applies to this outfit and most other ones, is that you might decide to wear a warm comfortable shoe on your journey, especially if you’re driving to the location, and then change the shoes in your car or in the bathroom. That might not be suitable for all weddings, but you might want to keep it in mind.
Finally, the outerwear layer. No matter how long and puffy your Winter dress is, there’s a style of coat that can be paired with it. Long wool coats, cozy wraps and capes, furry short shoulder covers with an elegant hood, long thick gloves, matching scarves, and so on.
Now that we’ve envisioned the outfit formula, let’s talk about Winter fabrics. You can opt for thicker fabrics like velvet or velour, taffeta is another great one – a mix of silk, nylon, and polyester that’s sturdy, voluminous and thick. Or you can go with lighter fabrics and then wear your thermals underneath. However, you will need to be careful they are thin enough not to show, while also keeping you warm.
Silhouette-wise, you can choose whichever you like as long as it allows room for the under layer you will be wearing. A line, straight and slightly figure hugging, empire style are all great options.
Let’s look at some outfits inspiration.
Silk & Chiffon Dresses + Long Coat
The first two outfits are the most common ones. You take an elegant occasion dress you already have in your wardrobe and pair it with a long warm coat in the same shade or a similar one. This is a great outfit if you know that the wedding venue will be warm and you don’t have to walk long from the car to get inside. You could also add a warm large wrap scarf until you get inside. For this type of occasion, you might even not require wearing any thermals under your dress.

Thicker Long Dress + Fur Coat
If you want to add both warmth to your outfit and also make it look more seasonal, a fur coat is a great idea. And so is choosing a dress fabric that’s more Winter appropriate. As I already mentioned, these are great options – velvet, velour, taffeta, anything that is mixed with wool or cashmere, or has an extra lining.

Higher Neckline Dresses
If you are someone who feels very cold, I suggest you opt for a higher neck dress, so that you will have more coverage as well as more room to hide thermals underneath. The first example is more suited for an evening wedding, while the second is more ideal for a slightly less formal morning wedding.

Dress + Cape
If you think your dress is too big to fit under a coat, you can consider wearing a cape. You don’t need to wear it over your head, as in the examples below, but you know you have that option, even if it’s just for when you need to pop outside the venue – maybe to watch the fireworks, or when you are leaving in the evening.
Wearing a cape adds an instant touch of old romance and elegance to the outfit, so it’s certainly not the best option if your style leans towards modern and edgy.
Of course, the cape can be as short and as long as you want it to. And the same holds for the thickness of the fabric and the warmth.
You can button it, if it comes with a button, or you can leave it open for a more contemporary look.

Plus Size Winter Wedding Guest Dresses
As I promised in the introduction, there are also ideas for different body shapes, including plus size. Have a look.

Other Body Types & Ages
For petite ladies, any outfit idea above will work, as long as you keep the dress and coat from overwhelming your body shape. Heels are going to be your best friend and so is showing a little skin, even if it’s just your hands and neck.
The same holds for women over 50. Don’t worry about your age but focus on your body shape, the colors that best suit your skin tone, and what makes you feel comfortable and gorgeous. As long as you are keeping it classy, you are wearing the perfect outfit.
Winter Wedding Guest Cocktail Dresses
This is usually my preferred dress type, at least in terms of length, for weddings and special occasions. I think cocktail dresses are especially perfect for petite ladies like me, but they can be a little tricky to style when it’s really cold, and you want to cover every inch of your body, while still looking the part.
Well, in this section, I will show you how I would wear a cocktail dress for a Winter wedding if that was my only option – perhaps the formal invitation specifies that dress style.
PS: If you, like me, are very sensitive to the cold weather, I urge you to opt for a longer dress style in Winter, especially if you are attending a more formal event.
That aside, let me share with you three Winter cocktail dress options, and how to style it for different temperatures, body sizes, and ages.
Red Toned Cocktail Dress – Styled 3 Ways
I think red, burgundy, maroon, and even dark dusty pinks are great colors for Winter weddings. They are still feminine but equally season appropriate. And they add to the romance of a Winter wedding.
The first is a silk/satin short sleeve dress that’s not going to give you much warmth, unless you manage to sneak a thermal layer underneath, perhaps a sleeveless thermal body con dress. However, this is perfect for the beginning or end of Winter, or for warmer locations. You can add a shoulder scarf or even a thicker fur cape, and then pair it with sandals, light invisible tights, or no tights.

The second option is very similar, but the dress is slightly thicker and more voluminous, meaning that the warm thermal layers are going to be better disguised. You can opt for a closed shoe to add warmth and a thicker and larger fur cape/coat.

The third option is a long sleeve dress, worn with opaque black tights and closed pumps. You can style it with a black coat, or a fur coat for colder occasions. Although I have never tried them myself, you could try wearing the dress with one of those sheer looking thick thermals that have become so popular. If you do, make sure they look subtle and elegant, and don’t ruin the overall look.

Black Winter Wedding Guest Dresses
Black is another color that works beautifully for Winter weddings. It’s elegant, dressy, and seasonal. In this section, I will show you different options to style it – different dress silhouettes, a few plus size options, and one for the mature ladies.
We are starting with two examples that show more skin around the neckline, perfect if you like the look, and can’t bear the colder temperatures. One features sandals and no tights, the other has more leg coverage.

We are now moving onto A line midi dresses, all styled with black tights and pumps, and similar accessories. The first example is slightly more modern, the second more retro, and the third is plus size.

Finally, are three Winter wedding cocktail dresses in black that have a more figure hugging silhouette. You can see that the warmth of the outfit increases from the first to the third. They are all equally elegant.

And for the more mature ladies, who might feel a little more conscious with their mid section, I wanted to show an example of a dress that is not clinging to the body like the other ones but instead is hugging it softly.

Winter Wedding Guest Outfits With Pants
In this last section, I will show you all the gorgeous wedding outfits ideas with pants that not only will give you more warmth than a dress, but will also look stunning, regardless of your size and age.
Just keep in mind that for adding warmth you can always wear thermals underneath the trousers and top, and you can also choose warmer fabrics. You can opt for closed shoes, and you can add a thicker coat.
Let’s start with the easiest and most elegant option – a suit. I will show you three different outfit ideas.

How stunning is this dark green suit with wide leg pants that resemble a skirt but which you can wear thick leggings underneath and no one will see them? You also won’t feel restricted, and will have some of the movement of a dress or skirt.

If you’re plus size, do consider a black embellished suit. The black elongates and flatters, but the embellishment adds the extra elegance and detail to take your Winter wedding guest outfit to the next level. Pair the suit with minimal accessories and an elegant coat.

For those who think suits can be boring, how about a suit that’s classy, a little edgy, and also features one of the colors of the year? Obviously, it doesn’t have to be that revealing!
The next two outfits are likely something you might not have thought about wearing to a wedding, yet they work. It’s the tailoring, the rich fabrics, and the elegant accessories that make it just perfect.

Wear the first one to a civil union with a smaller gathering afterwards, while the second one works better for a more formal wedding.
Here’s another idea that includes trousers, is elegant, but packs more warmth. If the event is slightly semi formal, this works great. You probably would have never thought to wear a knit to a wedding, but because of the beautiful fabric and elegant unique cut, the outfit feels dressed up and suitable for that kind of event.

The final look adds an extra layer while the sheerness ensures both elegance and not getting too warm inside, especially if the venue has heatings on. It’s also a great outfit idea for women over 60 who want a more mature outfit that still feels dressy and well thought out.
You could also pair it with a long sheer scarf once you are inside the venue, and wear a coat before you get there.
