How’s the Weather in Italy in September?
If you Google the September weather for Rome, Bolzano, and Catania, you’ll find temperatures similar to those in June—just a few degrees cooler.
In Sicily and other southern destinations, it’s still very much beach season. And if you’re planning to hike in the mountains or take a cable car up, a light jacket is usually enough—you might not even need it, especially around midday.
Because of this, you may also find my What to Wear in Italy in June guide helpful for extra inspiration. However, keep in mind that September marks a seasonal shift. Fall officially begins on September 22, so your outfits should reflect that transition.
Certain regions—like Liguria (Genoa and Cinque Terre), Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Lombardy (Milan’s region)—start seeing more rain this time of year. If you’re heading there, be sure to pack a light waterproof layer and closed shoes to stay comfortable.
Unless you’re planning a beach vacation, I recommend choosing versatile layers that blend elements of both summer and fall. This way, your outfits will not only be weather-appropriate but will also help you blend in with the locals.
That’s exactly how I’ve curated the outfit ideas that follow. I’ve also taken inspiration from Fall runway trends, so your looks will feel both timeless and on-trend.
What to Wear in Italy in September: 22 Outfit Ideas

A stylish and sophisticated choice, this outfit features a sleeveless, double-breasted blazer in light cream, paired with high-waisted, wide-leg black trousers. Perfect for a city break, it’s breathable, comfortable, and effortlessly chic.

This transitional outfit is ideal for Northern Italy. The full burgundy ensemble hints at the approaching fall season while remaining light and breathable. That said, expect to see burgundy across different seasons this year and beyond.

A crisp white oversized button-up shirt with wide sleeves gives this outfit a relaxed, modern edge. Paired with slightly cropped, high-waisted straight-leg jeans, it creates a flattering silhouette. A stylish belt cinches the waist, elevating this fresh take on the classic jeans-and-white-shirt combo.

A vintage-inspired short-sleeved tweed jacket in textured green pairs beautifully with high-waisted denim, striking a perfect balance between casual and chic. A small shoulder bag adds elegance, making this an ideal outfit for all-day sightseeing.
Although this outfit might look like it’s leaning more towards French style, the tan accessories give it that Italian flair.

This tailored camel suit, featuring high-waisted trousers and a coordinating blazer over a fitted white tank, blends sophistication with ease. The relaxed fit keeps it modern, while white sneakers add a laid-back, effortless touch.
Both the color and tailoring scream Max Mara but with a more relaxed vibe.

Deep olive, high-waisted trousers pair seamlessly with a fitted long-sleeve blouse, tucked in and cinched at the waist with a sleek belt. It’s a polished, put-together look perfect for Italy. Swap the heeled sandals for loafers or slides for extra comfort.

A similar outfit in lighter green tones, this look features a short-sleeved top and satin or silk trousers—both stylish and breathable in the sun. Green is going to be huge this fall!
PS: If you’re heading to Southern Italy, swap the knit for a cotton top.

This is what I’d call the “chic Italian woman uniform.” A high-waisted black skirt falling just below the knee is paired with a light gray short-sleeved blouse, loosely tucked and cinched with a statement belt. A timeless look I love, and this season, it’s also runway-approved!

A classic combination: a tailored navy blazer layered over a light blue shirt, paired with high-waisted mustard-yellow trousers for a bold pop of color. In Italy, mustard is often styled as a neutral, making this an effortlessly stylish choice.

A timeless off-the-shoulder black midi dress that elegantly hugs the figure, highlighting the neckline and shoulders while falling gracefully to mid-calf. Ideal for transitioning weather—perfect for a romantic dinner.
PS: Don’t forget to pack a cardigan!

This vibrant flowing dress in orange tones features a striking pattern and a wrap design that cinches at the waist, enhancing the silhouette. Breezy yet slightly more covered up, it’s the perfect Amalfi Coast dress for September.

Tailored cream-colored trousers paired with a white blouse create a fresh, sophisticated look that works year-round—just adjust the outerwear and accessories. A great pick for Northern Italy, Rome, or Florence later in the month.

This dark gray, relaxed-fit suit is a great option if you love tailored pieces. Versatile and effortlessly chic, you can also wear the blazer and trousers separately to create multiple outfits. September in Italy is blazer weather—especially in the North and Central regions!
The slight pop of green gives it a more contemporary vibe, especially when paired with white sneakers.

This look blends femininity with a city-chic vibe: a light blue sleeveless tweed dress layered under a beige trench. And if it gets too warm, just remove the trench and enjoy the late Summer sun.

A chic black button-up shirt layered under a fitted black leather jacket creates an effortlessly stylish, edgy look. A classic you’ll see Italian women wearing often—whether with a leather jacket or a fabric blazer. Draping it over the shoulders adds even more polish!

An A-line navy suede dress with three-quarter sleeves, cinched at the waist with a matching belt, offers a timeless silhouette with a fun, seasonal twist. Suede and cobalt blue are both huge for Fall 2025!

A sophisticated take on layering: a crisp white button-up shirt is worn under a tailored black vest, paired with flowing high-waisted, wide-leg white trousers. With its elegant “old money” vibe, the vest adds a timeless yet trendy touch.

For late September, this outfit leans into deeper, fall-ready tones. A pinstriped button-up shirt paired with a gray blazer and burgundy trousers and loafers creates a polished yet comfortable look—ideal for exploring the city or a shopping day.

A white blouse is styled with high-waisted, chocolate-brown wide-leg trousers and a beige sweater draped over the shoulders. One of my favorites from this selection! It’s classic, yet the leather fabric, wide-leg silhouette, and sandal pairing add a modern touch.

This look was inspired by an outfit I wore last fall in Milan—and the Etro Fall 2025 Runway show! A luxurious silky emerald green blouse is layered under a plaid blazer and paired with fitted blue jeans. Finished with a brown handbag, it balances casual and sophisticated effortlessly.

A sleek, elegant black dress with a minimalist silhouette, made more season-appropriate with burgundy block-heeled sandals and a small crossbody bag. Not a fan of heels? Swap them for loafers, sliders, or even a pair of sneakers.

A cozy, cream-colored sweater pairs with a pleated leather camel midi skirt, creating a glamorous yet comfortable look. Ideal for Northern Italy’s cooler mornings when you want to feel both warm and feminine. Leather midi skirts dominated the Fall/Winter 2025 runways!
