How To Plan & Pack For Italy In March
The outfit ideas in this post follow the 10 Basic Rules of Italian Fashion Style and incorporate many of the key Italian wardrobe staples discussed here – 20 Must-Have Wardrobe Pieces To Dress Like An Italian Woman.
I suggest you refer to these first, and then read my Italy Packing List & System, to get all the tips for making your packing stress-free and easy. That guide also includes a free downloadable Packing Checklist for Spring.
When planning the outfit ideas for March, I have incorporated both classic colors and trending ones from the Spring Summer 2025 Runway. There will be muted neutral outfits, pastel and bolder ones.
Northern Italy In March Outfits
These are the kinds of outfits I imagine you wearing as you stroll the streets of Bolzano, Trento, Trieste, Milan, Venice, and also Genoa.

If you want to go up to the mountains, which you definitely should do, make sure you pack ski clothes, particularly if you plan on doing any ski or other snow sports.
For those taking the cable car to admire the views, I suggest you pack a thick Winter jacket, with gloves, a scarf, and a hat. However, don’t be surprised to find out that up there is actually warmer than you thought, especially on a sunny day!
What To Wear In Rome In March
These outfits can be worn for Rome, Florence, Bologna, and all regions in Central Italy.

You’ll likely see a pattern – lots of cigarette pants, jeans, sweaters, blazers, coats and trench coats, tshirts, and loafers. That’s because these are staples when dressing for Italy, and when you want to look smart but also feel comfortable, warm, with plenty of layers to help you transition from warmer to colder temperatures, and vice versa.
Packing these types of clothing will also help you create more outfits with interchangeable pieces.
I am sharing examples of the same outfits in different color palettes, to show you that you can take the same concept and play with colors that suit your style the best – neutrals, pastels, and bright ones!
Outfits For Southern Italy In March
You can wear these from Campania down to Sicily. You can also wear them in Central and Northern Italy when Spring gets warmer.

You might notice, that I haven’t included outfits with dresses. That’s because it can still be chilly to get your legs out. If you love wearing dresses and skirts, you’ll find plenty of inspiration in my April post.
PS: Unless you are going to swim in an indoor pool, I don’t think you need to pack a swimsuit for this time of the year. While many of you might endure the sea temperatures, I personally would suggest focusing on sightseeing when the weather is perfect – neither cold nor hot. It won’t last very long!
Packing Tips For March In Italy
March in Italy is still a time for layering, especially in the North, where winter is holding on. Ski season is still in full swing. Here are some packing tips to help you navigate the cooler days:
- Prepare for Cold Weather in the North:
In Northern Italy, temperatures can still be quite low, especially at the start of the month. Pack warm clothing like thermal tops, sweaters, scarves, and a heavy coat. If you’re planning to visit ski resorts, don’t forget your ski gear! - Layers for Transitional Weather:
While the North can be chilly, the rest of Italy is starting to warm up. In the Central and Southern regions, layering is essential. Bring a mix of light and warmer layers, including long-sleeve tops, cardigans, and jackets that can be easily removed in the afternoons. - Neutral & Darker Colors:
Darker colors are still very much in play, especially in Northern Italy, where winter styles dominate. Opt for warm, deep tones like navy, dark green, and charcoal. For the South, you can experiment with lighter neutrals or muted pastels as spring is beginning to show. - Warm Footwear:
In the North, pack boots that will keep you warm and dry, especially if you’re heading to the mountains. For Central and Southern Italy, comfortable shoes for walking are a must, as temperatures may be mild but still cool enough for some walking tours. - Winter Accessories:
Don’t forget your winter accessories, especially if you’re heading to ski areas. Hats, gloves, and scarves will keep you comfortable in the colder regions.
