Thinking of celebrating Valentine’s Day in Italy? Or maybe you’d love to enjoy the sights all to yourself? Either way, there’s something special about seeing a place you adore from a different angle—and February in Italy certainly gives you that.

When I think about this month, a few words instantly come to mind: cold, nostalgic, romantic.

So what do you actually wear in Italy in February when it’s chilly? And is it really that cold?

Those are exactly the questions I’ll answer in this post—along with plenty of outfit inspiration for different parts of the country.

Let’s get you planned and packed, shall we?

How’s The Weather In Italy In February?

I am sure that’s the first question you are asking yourself, and rightly so. Many of you might already have an idea, especially if it’s the weather that made you book that holiday. Perhaps, you are going skiing or just want to be in the snow.

Well, this post is not a Winter holiday outfit post. We’ll focus on the usual city holiday, centred around sightseeing and eating good food.

If you are going skiing, you can still use these outfit ideas to inspire your city or sightseeing days outfits.

Or is it the sun you are seeking? Southern Italy can be the perfect place to escape to during the cold European Winters. If that’s exactly why you are going, then, don’t worry, I will share outfits for that kind of weather too.

Let’s first look at the weather from north to south.

I always like to take these cities as a point of reference because I know they have different weather even if they are in the same part of the country – Bolzano and Milan in the North, Florence and Rome in the center, and Bari and Catania in the South.

Northern Italy Weather in February:

Bolzano has an average temperature of 7°C (44 °F) compared to 6 °C (42 °F) in Milan. The temperature in Bolzano can get as high as 16°C, and as low as -4°C. In Milan, it usually stays within the 14 and -1 °C range.

The difference is mainly that Bolzano weather is more volatile, at least in terms of the temperature, and that’s because it is higher up and closer to the mountains. How sunny or not sunny it is has a big effect on the changing temperature. At least, that’s how I understand it, but if you are a meteorologist feel free to correct me.

In terms of rain, it rains three times more in Milan than in Bolzano. That explains why the humidity is much higher, which also leads to the cold feeling colder — because it’s damp cold vs dry cold.

Please keep in mind that not all mountain cities in Northern Italy will have a similar situation to Bolzano, that’s why I love it so much. Cities like Aosta, Belluno, and even Asiago that are higher up have a similar situation to Milan. That’s because their geography exposes them to wetter, cloudier air, while Bolzano’s valley position creates a dry, sunny sheltered climate.

What does all of this mean for your outfit planning?

If you are going to Bolzano, you might see yourself removing one layer if you are directly in the sun, especially around mid day. So keep that in mind when planning your outfit.

Everywhere else in the North, you’ll likely need to do that mostly when you are inside, or if you are someone who gets hot easily when walking.

Either way, you’ll need to pack plenty of warm layers:

Of course, the number of layers you will need in the North depends on these three things:

  1. How North you are going
  2. What type of holiday have you planned – mostly outdoor or mostly indoor?
  3. How cold you are as a person

Make sure to consider all those things when planning your outfits.

Central Italy Weather in February:

For this area of Italy, I like to look at Florence and Rome, because one is higher up and the other is further down. However, their regions both sit on the western coast, directly on the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Their weather is in fact fairly similar, with Florence being slightly colder (just 2 degrees °C lower, which is 3.6 °F lower).

Compared to Bolzano, which has an average temperature of 7°C, Florence’s is 10°C, and Rome’s sits at 12°C. That’s much better, for those of us who don’t like cold weather!

However, if you don’t mind the colder weather but you are seeking a sunny spot, Bolzano gets more hours of sunshine a day than those other two cities – an average of 6.5 hours compared to 4 for Florence and 4.7 for Rome.

Temperatures in Florence and Rome can go as high as 16°C (60 °F) during the second month of the year, and as low as -1 °C and 1°C respectively (30 °F and 33°F).

If you are still picking which city to visit, Rome might give you the best of both worlds – sunnier and warmer. But if sun and warmth is what you are after, wait till you see the weather in Southern Italy!

So how do you pack for Florence and Rome in February?

Looking at the temperatures and comparing with other holidays I have had, I would pack similar to what I packed for Milan in October 2024 but warmer and with more winter appropriate shoes, even though it should rain much less in Florence and Rome than it did in Milan.

What does that mean for your outfits?

Southern Italy Weather in February:

If we take Bari and Catania as our points of reference, packing for both will look similar to packing for Rome. The only difference is that in Sicily the temperature can get much higher.

Bari has an average temperature of 10 °C (50  °F) in February vs 12  °C (53 °F) in Catania. However, in Catania the temperature can go as high as 23 °C (74 °F) while in Bari it stays under 19 °C (65 °F).

With those numbers in mind, I would pack for Sicily in February similarly to how I did for Bologna in April, just plan slightly warmer outfits.

What does this mean for your clothing?

Of course, if you plan to go up to Mount Etna, you’ll need to plan outfits for the mountain, just as you would in Northern Italy.

What To Wear in Italy in February – Northern Italy

Now that we’ve looked at the weather for each part of the country, and made a note of the type of layers and warmth we need to pack, let me show you the type of outfits you want to create to be warm and comfortable, but also fit in with the locals.

We are starting with Northern Italy, which is why I will show you the warmest outfits first.

This first outfit works whether you are going to Milan or a mountain city. It’s simple but elegant, yet the jeans and the chunky boots give you both warmth and a more modern vibe. So if you are in doubt which coat to take, consider a fur coat, but make sure to take it with you on the plane, to save luggage space.

The second outfit could equally be worn in Aosta, in Turin, in Milan, in Florence, and so on. Again, it’s a fur coat, but this time it’s a short one which makes it more practical and also more day appropriate.

Always, keep in mind that you can make all these outfits even warmer by wearing the right thermal layers underneath. You can also add a scarf and a hat. I love the grey and camel pairing.

If you love black like me, there’s no reason to complicate things. One of your outfits could be all black. Just pick the warmest pieces you own in black and pair them together to create a classic elegant look that works wonderful in cities like Turin and Milan.

Do you love wearing cream and white in winter? Then, this outfit is for you. It’s chic, cosy, and has that little pop of color that elevates it even more. You can wear this in Milan or in a mountain resort, just switch the shoes for the slopes.

If you love tucking your trousers inside your boots, here’s an outfit that allows you to do that. The beautiful winter colors make it feel rich, yet cosy, put together but not too much. You can add a maroon beanie to match the hat.

I would personally not wear skirts or dresses in Winter in Italy, unless I was going out to dinner or a special occasion. But if you happen to love wearing them, you can easily layer thermals underneath or even wear a pair of leggings. Here’s an outfit that allows you to that, and is warm, cosy, but also feminine and chic.

What To Wear in Florence & Rome in February

Imagine yourself getting ready for a day of museums hopping, strolling through the charming Italian streets, and eating good food. You want to be dressed to impress but also feel comfortable, right?

These are the outfits I suggest.

A cream ensemble with shades of green and camel will make you look just as stylish as the locals. If you don’t like wearing your trousers inside your boots (I don’t), you can easily opt for shorter boots that fit under the trousers, and maybe roll up the hem to show the shoes.

It might be February, but Spring is likely in the air, so why not add a little color? Those lighter khaki pants make this look pop while keeping it classic and elegant. If you can bear it, then showing some skin around your ankles always makes the outfit feel more Italian and more feminine. If you can’t, you can always try one of those fake clear socks.

Still in winter mode? Then, this color palette is gorgeous. It’s effortless and very elegant. Puffer jackets might not always look this great, but the key is to find one that fits you like a glove, is not too chunky, but it’s still very warm.

In past fashion posts, I’ve shown you many outfits with this color palette — camel, red, and a touch of animal print.  It’s a little bolder but still classy. This is an outfit that works perfectly in Rome or Florence. Also, the short teddy coat can keep you warm but it’s not too bulky.

If you want a truly simple and chic outfit, whether you are going on vacation or on a work trip, this is it. Those thick black trousers are the dream, and so is that high neck sweater and green coat. They are all simple pieces but the quality of the fabrics and design makes this outfit look incredible.

Finally, here’s another outfit that brings a touch of those Winter colors we know and love. Again, you don’t have to wear the trousers inside the boots, and you could easily swap the boots for black loafers. How chic is that scarf? That’s actually a more Italian way to wear a silk scarf, as opposed to tying it around your neck.

What To Wear in Southern Italy  in February

Traveling to Italy in search of the sunshine? These outfits are perfect for warmer weather.

Let’s start with a very interesting one. This outfit is not the type of color palette I usually show you, but I actually saw someone wearing it and had to share it. Because of the lighter layering, it works beautifully for Southern Italy.

Here’s another similar outfit to the last one I showed you in the previous section. This one is lighter and also a little more casual. And if there’s one thing I can tell you about Southern Italy is that the best type of outfit is one that feels elegant and put together but not too overdone.

This next one is a great example. It features some tailored pieces, but also a simple knit and scarf. That combination dresses it down while keeping it looking beautiful. Those warmer colors are also perfect for sunny days.

Here’s another example of a casual outfit that’s still elegant. The jeans cut, the jacket silhouette, and the color palette are so simple but tasteful.

This one is one of my favorites. It could be a great outfit for a casual office day, but you can also wear it on the weekend or vacation in Southern Italy in February. If you love looking smart but feeling comfortable, this look nails that balance.

A little leather is perfect to keep things fun and casual. It’s also a very classic outfit when paired with jeans and a sweater. Finally, those red shades give this outfit a more romantic feel, which is perfect for February. This could be a great casual Valentine’s date outfit, no matter where you are.

Finally, I’d like to share a lighter outfit for those very warm days. You’re likely to get a few, especially in Sicily towards the end of the month.

I remember going to Palermo for work at the beginning of March and wearing a light blazer and a tshirt. Certain cities that are inland can get very warm, even if everywhere else is cold.

If the weather is looking too cold for this look, you can still wear it — just layer a thermal underneath the button up shirt, or wear the sweater. You can even do a double sweater situation, by wearing one and putting the other over the shoulders. It’s actually on trend!
