6 Wedding Dress Tips I Wish I Knew Before Choosing Mine
Before I start sharing all the wedding dress ideas that are Italian-approved, I’d like to give you a few tips that might save you a few costly mistakes down the line. As usual, take what feels right and leave what doesn’t behind.
These are based on my personal wedding dress shopping and wearing experience, and the fashion tips I have learned along the way.
1. Knowing Your Colors Is Essential
If you still haven’t done your color analysis, your big day should be a big enough reason for you to finally do it. You can consider it a wedding expense, if you choose to do it with a professional color analyst, or you can do it on your own.
Either way, I suggest reading my Simplified Color Analysis Guide.
That guide will help you understand why this is so important, but I will explain it briefly here.
You definitely know that wedding dresses are not all white. Even the white ones have different tones. Then there are those in ivory, blush, champagne, and different shades of cream. Nowadays, you can also find colored wedding dresses, and black is really trending this season.
While you might have a favorite color already, that doesn’t mean that color suits you.
Take it from someone who made that mistake.
Mistake n1: As a Deep Winter (that’s my color season in short), ivory is not a good color on me, but that’s the wedding dress I ended up wearing because I had no clue. I had never heard about color analysis, my mum didn’t either, and none of the boutiques I visited mentioned anything about color.
Luckily, my neutral undertone and the fact the dress was a lighter ivory helped make the dress look better than it should have.
2. Start Looking Early
I don’t necessarily mean going to shops and trying on dresses, though you could do that. Instead, I truly urge every bride to make the dress a big component of the wedding planning from day one. Here’s why.
The feel and look of the dress should go with the feel and look of your wedding event – the ceremony and reception, the venue, the flowers, and even the whole bridal party wear.
Because you are likely to book your venue before you choose your wedding dress, it’s important you know the type of wedding dress you want, and how badly you want it. If you are only set on one style (ex: a princess gown), and that style doesn’t go with the venue (a beach venue), that will cause issues later on.
Reading my Italian Wedding Inspiration article will help you go through the wedding planning process in the right order, no matter whether you want an Italian-style wedding or not.
3. Try Different Wedding Dress Styles
Even if you are stuck on one style only, please try multiple ones, yes, even those you never thought you could like.
Of course, that needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
If you want an elegant wedding, you should only try dresses that look elegant in your eyes, but there are different styles of wedding dresses that can achieve that look. I think you get what I mean.
4. Know What Suits You
I know I have just told you to try different styles of dresses, but ultimately you should keep in mind what you know fits well and makes you feel your best.
Mistake n2: For me, it was never tight dresses, but always A line or flared ones. So why did I pick a fit and flare style?
That’s likely because I allowed myself to try something different and for some reason I got swayed, which is very unlike me. After all, I was only 23 years old.
5. Don’t Be Afraid To Shop Around
Unless you truly found the one, I suggest you shop around because you never know what the next boutique will have in store for you.
That’s why it’s better to start early, so you can leave enough time between one bridal appointment and the other, to let your mind rest and reconvene.
If you are worried the people that will accompany you will get tired, we have a saying about that in Italy that goes like this: “meglio solo che male accompagnato”. It translates to: it’s better to be alone than in bad company.
By that I mean, that one person is all you need, and if you are a decisive person, there’s nothing wrong with going alone, especially for the first few appointments.
6. Do Second Guess Yourself
Of course, do it before you buy the dress!
Here’s what I mean.
If you feel pulled towards a dress, and you even start thinking that that might be the one, ask yourself these questions:
- Do I like how I look in this dress?
That question brings me to an important point. Take a picture of the dresses you try on and like. When you are back home, you can go through them and eliminate the ones you don’t like in photos. After all, pictures are a big part of your wedding day, the part that’s going to stay with you forever!
- Does the color suit my color season?
- Does the style suit the wedding I am planning?
- Does the style suit and flatter my body shape?
I have an extra tip I’d like to share with you. Many brides go on extreme diets before their big day. I was one of them. If that’s the case for you, it’s essential you keep in mind whether you plan on losing more weight after finding the dress. Even if you don’t, make sure the dress still allows for alterations.
Mistake n3: I ended up losing a lot more weight because of the stress, and while they did alter it again, the style did no longer fit me well. I spent the entire night pulling it up. That’s why I don’t suggest strapless dresses.
- Will I still love the dress in 10 years?
Remember when I told you that you should try multiple styles because you don’t know what you will like until you’ve tried them on? Well, if you like something that’s a little far off from what you had in mind, do second guess yourself. And ask yourself whether that’s the dress you want on your forever wedding album.
Mistake n4: My dress was slightly mermaid style, and that’s not something I would wear if I could go back to the day I chose it. If I had second guessed myself, if I had allowed myself to try on that other dress I saw and loved, I might have had the dress of my dreams. So second guessing yourself is not always bad.
- Am I rushing or being rushed into this?
If you are someone who needs their time choosing (I am that type), it might be the pressure from others (even if it is just a wrong perception you have) that’s making you lean towards a dress, and not necessarily because it’s the one.
Mistake n5: That’s what happened to me. I ran out of options, likely because the shops only show you a selected number. On top of that, one of the stores that had the dress I liked gave me a bad trial experience, so I walked out. I never even tried it on! And then I went and bought the only dress I liked, although I am not sure what I liked about it.
7. Enjoy The Process
This is the most important piece of advice I can give you. It’s not just about your wedding day, the planning process counts too, especially because the way you go about it can either bring you joy or stress.
It’s normal to have a little stress along the way. Even a few disagreements are part of the process, especially when you are surrounded by emotionally immature people. Be strong. And remember that’s your day. Put your feet down and stop any ridiculous requests early on.
Don’t invite people you don’t like to your wedding dress trial, even if that’s to stay on good terms or please someone else. There’s always a polite diplomatic way around doing what you want. You just need to think smarter.
18 Wedding Dress Ideas That Feel Very Italian
The dresses I am about to show you are not essentially all dresses I would pick myself, but I think they are all beautiful and Italian-approved.
Here’s why I believe many Italian women would love trying on and even choosing one of these dresses.
- They are elegant and tasteful. Yes, even the ones that feel more unique and extravagant, still retain that level of elegance that most Italian women dream for their big day.
- They are all different, yet stunning. That means there’s something beautiful for nearly everyone. While you might not find the exact style you like here, one or two should help you get closer to what you truly want your wedding dress to look and feel like.
I suggest you look at all of them, even if that’s just a quick scroll until one catches your attention and you stop to look closer.
To make it easier for you, I am going to add a title to each dress to help direct your attention towards a particular style, or the overall feeling the dress evocates.
Of course, while I try to always be objective, there’s also an element of personal style and preference that comes in when I write this article. You can still like the dress even if you don’t fully relate with my description. You are the one who is going through the process. Your opinion is what matters the most. I am just here to inspire you.
Enough chit chatting. It’s finally time to see all the stunning dresses.
Modern Vintage Wedding Dress Idea
I am starting with one my favorites. I love how this dress mixes different fabrics, feels very elegant and traditional but also modern. The lace bodice with the long sleeves and high neckline feels a little vintage to me, yet the softer not bulky chiffon skirt makes it feel more modern.

The A line silhouette is likely to suite various body shapes.
I can see this dress being worn for a very elegant wedding, no matter how big or small.
I imagine a beautiful bride with a full updo or her hair half up half down, wearing vintage shoes and earrings. A vintage venue in Turin or Lake Como sounds like the perfect Italian wedding location. Of course, you could wear this anywhere in the world. I am just trying to help you create a clearer picture.
The transition seasons seem to be the best time to wear long sleeves, but you could also wear it in Winter with a short white fur coat.
Romantic & Modest Wedding Dress

There’s something extremely elegant about this dress. It’s simple yet unique, like every detail in its design has been carefully thought of.
If you are someone who’s looking for a simple wedding dress that doesn’t feel too modern and clean, this style might be the one for you.
It’s also perfect if you prefer covering up your shoulders, or being modest is very important to you. In that case, just make sure the dress flow into more of an A line and the fabric doesn’t reveal more than you’d like to.
I can see a bride wearing this dress in a very romantic wedding setting, perhaps outdoors, and this dress feels comfortable and flowy to dance the night away.
I would wear the hair like in the picture or a similar style, just earrings and maybe a bracelet, and beautiful sandals or peep toe shoes.
Romantic Strapless Wedding Dress
If you’ve always dreamed of wearing a strapless dress, have a look at this one. Doesn’t it feel just perfectly balanced?

It’s intricate on top and simpler at the bottom. It’s big but not too big. And because it’s slightly cropped you can show off your beautiful shoes and also not worry about tripping in your own skirt.
I find this dress perfectly suits the stereotypical Italian wedding in the Apulian or Tuscan countryside. So if you are dreaming of recreating that type of wedding, take this as a sign.

Ethereal Floral Wedding Dress
There are many ways I would describe this wedding dress. It’s romantic, feels vintage, very elegant, feminine, and beautiful. But most importantly it feels soft and airy while also being classic and elegant.

Is this the type of wedding dress you would like to wear?
This could be perfect for an elegant wedding, whether it has a vintage vibe or a more sophisticated style.
It’s also a great option if you want your dress to have a floral element but wouldn’t consider colored flowers.
You could easily wear it for a wedding destination in Italy provided the venue doesn’t feel too rustic, modern, nor beachy. A palazzo wedding in Italy sounds like the perfect venue, but also a very elegant wedding in Tuscany, perhaps more indoors than outdoors.
Off the Shoulder Wedding Dress Idea
Are you getting married in Sicily, Puglia or Southern Italy?
If so, this is the dress I imagine you wearing if you want it to feel traditional and fun, perhaps to go with your personality.

The off the shoulder sleeves make it incredibly romantic and feminine. Either way, it’s a beautiful dress to wear for an elegant but more rustic wedding.
Your hair choice can make this dress look more dressed up or more relaxed. I think a simple curly updo or wearing your hair down with soft waves would look gorgeous.
Elegant Backless Wedding Dress Idea
This is the dress I would wear if I had a smaller lighter bust. It’s elegant, minimalist, but its simplicity makes it feel both timeless and current. The best part is that it’s made of my favorite fabric, mikado.

I would imagine wearing this dress to an elegant wedding in a venue with a stunning view.
But enough about what I would do.
If you’ve always dreamt of wearing a minimalist but elegant dress, love the idea of pockets, and don’t have any issues with wearing a more unique bra situation, this one might be a great option. All you need is an elegant wedding setting that feels a little more modern than traditional.
Romantic Court House Wedding Dress
So you are getting married in a court house and perhaps you are having a smaller even right after. You want your wedding dress to feel traditional but appropriate for a simpler wedding ceremony and party. Look at this dress!

The lace gives it that signature wedding dress look. It’s traditional, gorgeous, elegant, elaborate but the shorter length makes it feel less formal and a great idea for a more intimate event.
This could equally be a great second dress option for when it’s time to start twirling.
Short Wedding Dress Over 50
If you are more mature, you might be thinking the dress I just showed you it’s too playful and romantic for you. You likely more something short that’s sleeker, and more sophisticated. I have the perfect dress for you.

This dress is stunning yet simple, modest and elegant, but not boring. You can find many similar options with different design details, in case you want something more elaborate but that have this style. If you are interested in shopping for your dress in Italy, I suggest having a look at this designer: Le Spose di Gio.
Traditional Italian Lace Wedding Dress
Are you thinking how come I haven’t yet showed you a very traditional Italian dress? Well, here it comes.

It’s the kind of dress the stereotypical Italian woman, perhaps from Southern Italy, would wear – think Maria Grazia Cucinotta.
It’s also the dress one would wear to both a simpler and more elegant Sicilian wedding dress.
This style could equally work for Central Italy or for a more sophisticated event. I especially see you wearing this dress outdoors. But if you love this style, and it suits your body shape, there’s no reason why you couldn’t wear it indoors.
The hairstyle in the picture feels just right. It keeps it elegant while adding softness.
While the neckline allows for it, I would personally not wear a necklace. That way, you can let the dress shine on its own.
Italian Fit and Flare Wedding Dress
Perhaps, it’s not the traditional Italian wedding dress you are waiting for.
Are you a modern bride who loves Italian fashion for it’s timeless elegant style while also embracing the current fashion scene?
Or perhaps you love it because it celebrates the women’s curves.
Either way, here’s a dress that combines a more modern style with elegance and femininity. It’s also simple and minimalist, but unique in its own way. And it’s the first fit and flare dress I am showing you.
Do you like it?

I told you I regret wearing a fit and flare dress, but I am petite. Also, I think I would have loved my dress more if the fabric was as sleek and simple. Instead, my dress had a traditional fabric and a modern silhouette.
This dress feels just right. The simple fabric complements the simple silhouette and helps the fit and flare style feel balanced and elegant. I also love the neckline with the feathery design. It adds a unique touch but it keeps it tasteful.
If you are unsure about weather you should wear a fit and flare, I think that the style is especially flattering on women who have a very lean and naturally tall body. They have some curves but not too much. Of course, that’s my opinion.
Italian Beach Wedding Dress Idea
Are you shouting at the screen asking this: Alessia, where are the beach wedding dresses?
Here comes one. I have tried to keep the variety, so I only found one perfect beach wedding dress I’d like to show you, but I can add more later on.
I am pretty sure beach brides would want something lightweight, airy, flowy, romantic, but equally elegant. You are also probably thinking sleeveless. Am I right?
I have only been to one beach wedding and I can remember it being extremely hot and sandy.
I think this dress fits the brief. Do you agree?

It gives all of the above, plus it’s also halter neck. And it combines two great lightweight fabrics: silk on top and organza at the bottom.
Silk/Satin Wedding Dress
Is your ideal wedding dress more feminine and sexy than what I have shown you so far? Perhaps you want to channel the elegance and femininity of Sophia Loren while showing off your beautiful body in a very tasteful manner.
Well, more figure hugging silk and satin wedding dresses are perfect when done right. Here’s an example I’d like to share with you.

Isn’t that jewellery detail at the back stunning?
Ball Gown Wedding Dress Ideas
I have one more fit and flare option to show you, but I will leave it for the end. I think all the princess brides are waiting to see a few ball gown style wedding dresses.
Are you set on a big gown for your big day?
Since I left you waiting till the end, I am going to show you all four at once. Let me give each a separate label for ease of reference.
- Elegant Princess Wedding Dress
- Romantic Lace Ball Gown Wedding Dress
- Sophisticated Ball Gown That’s Not Huge
- Modern Colored Floral Option (very on trend)
Don’t forget to scroll back up and look at dress n.3 and n.6. Those had bigger skirts too.

Did you find one you like?
I suggest you have a look at these two Italian designers: Nicole Milano and Antonio Riva.
Dual Wedding Dress Trend
Many brides are now spending twice the amount to buy two wedding dresses, so they can have a shorter one for the end of the evening. Have you considered doing that?
Well, you might not need too, provided you find the right dual dress.
Many Italian designers, and I am sure that applies to international ones, are now designing dual dresses with that exact bridal need in mind.
Dual dresses come with a longer skirt overlay that you can then remove to show a shorter version of that same dress. It might look a little different if it comes with two or more fabric combinations.
I chose to show you a traditional yet modern option. The lace and silhouette make it feel traditional, but the shorter skirt in the middle gives it that playful modern touch.

This is just an example to give you the idea. You don’t have to wear a dress with a short skirt, if you don’t want. Your skirt overlay can cover everything, until you are ready to show off your legs!
Mermaid Style Wedding Dress
For now, I have chose to end this selection of wedding dress ideas with a final fit and flare one. This is the one that looks the most mermaid. I say for now because it’s very likely I will be adding more wedding dresses to this post, so bookmark it and come back soon.
Also, don’t forget to share it with another bride to be friend of yours. Sharing is caring!

Again, I have decided to shown you a softer mermaid style with a beautiful minimalist design and fabric, so that your body can do the talking. And the simplicity of the dress can add the necessary sophistication to balance the tighter look, so it never feels too much.
In total, you have 3 fit and flare dress ideas to look at: this one, n.10, and n.12. This feels the most romantic. N.10 is the more modern one. While n.12 is the most feminine.
Which one do you prefer?
