It’s that time of the year when we ask ourselves: should I wear a nice dress, or is it just too cold for that?

If you’ve asked yourself the same, you’ll love seeing how Italian women style warm winter dresses. They know how to stay cosy, flatter their shape, and still look effortlessly chic—even on the coldest days.

As you get inspired by these Italian looks, think about the dress styles your closet needs this winter—the kind that come out year after year because they’re both timeless and gorgeous.

Here, I’m highlighting 10 warm winter dress styles Italian women love, along with shopping options. That way, you can gather inspiration and find pieces to add to your wardrobe, all in one place.

How Italian Women Style Sweater Dresses

Ever thought that sweater dresses can look frumpy and not elegant? I have, but writing this post reminds me that Italian women do it better, so let’s get inspired by them.

Here are 3 easy looks you can recreate with pieces you already own. You might need to purchase the colored tights, or perhaps a pair of red shoes if you choose to recreate that third look, but I am pretty sure you own most of the essentials.

What about the sweater dress? Do you have one that fits you like a glove; is it high quality, and not full of bobbles?

If yours has seen better days, here are three options I suggest adding to your Winter capsule this year:

Weekend by Max Mara Black Sweater Dress (fairly priced I’d say)
Talbots Tan Sweater Dress (my favorite but low in stock, so hurry up)
A Burgundy Turtleneck Sweater Dress by L’Agence (very elegant)

You will find more gorgeous sweater dresses inside my Winter Dresses Collection here.

Let’s talk about the styling now.

If option two is too much for you, try option 1. By pairing the tights and heels to your sweater dress, you will make your outfit unique without drawing too much attention, while also elongating your body. Don’t be afraid to wear slingbacks and matching tights in Winter, especially for a special occasion or an extra fashionable day out!

Cashmere A Line Midi Dresses

If you are curvy like me, you might not want to emphasize your curves with a straight line sweater dress that tends to cling to your body. The same holds if you are conscious about your stomach area.

In that case, here’s a similar warm Winter dress style that should help you feel more confident in your body.

I am talking about the cashmere A line dress, especially elegant when it’s midi. If you don’t have it in your wardrobe, this is your sign to add it now. Have a look at these two options I have curated for you:

A classic black ribbed cashmere dress (coming back in stock soon)

A budget cream option loved on Amazon (not cashmere)

All the three ways of styling sweater dresses above (previous section) work equally for this style of dress. However, here’s my favorite way to style this.

It’s simple but so so elegant. The cream and black color palette is perfect for the colder months but equally feminine and romantic. The tonal look makes it simple to style and elevates the dress instantly, at least in my opinion. If you don’t have a cape-style coat, you can wear it with a longer or shorter cream coat, but I think that a shorter boxier coat brings an edgy element to the outfit that’s really gorgeous.

Velvet Winter Dress (Mini or Midi)

Have you tried wearing a velvet dress in Winter, with tights and pumps or low ankle boots? Even if you style it under a coat, the rich fabric is going to stand out and add an extra styling element to your outfit.

Velvet dresses are perfect if you want a warmer fabric to wear for a special occasion, like a date night. However, you can equally wear them for work or for a shopping day with the girls.

My favorite length is a mini shift dress, not too short, but one that I can style with opaque tights and pumps or slingbacks.

I found a gorgeous one here; I suggest you grab it quickly before it sells out.

If you prefer a midi length, here are two with a rich color that’s perfect for this season:

Mid velvet dress in emerald green

Below you can see a simple way to style each like an Italian would. These are all perfect options for a Christmas work party, and a date night. You can even wear the first look to work, especially if you work in a very creative fashion-forward environment.

Long Sleeve Shirt Dress

If you are a regular reader you’ll know I refer to a few outfits as the Italian uniform. A shirt dress is one of them, but can you wear it in Winter?

You surely can, and here’s why and how.

A long sleeve midi shirt dress, even in a lighter fabric, can be layered with a thermal vest and tights below. If you then add a coat and scarf, that should give you plenty of warmth for day to day wearing. Obviously, we wouldn’t wear this outfit in below zero locations, although you could with a few extra layers.

However, what if you found a long sleeve shirt dress that has a ticker warmer fabric, perhaps with a wool-blend? That would be awesome. Well, here’s a splurge dress that ticks all the boxes, in case it fits your budget.

I will keep an eye out for a lower budget option. In the meantime, let me share a few cotton options that you can easily layer.

Here’s how I would style both for a date night:

I suggest styling both black shirt dresses really simply, and let the dress shine. Add heels or boots, a coat or even a leather jacket if it’s not that cold, or increase the layers underneath. Remember to wear your dresses with those warm thermals!

Tweed Shift Dress (Perfect for Layering)

Do you love wearing roll necks in Winter, but you also want to wear a dress? Here’s the perfect style to do that – a sleeveless shift dress.

This style is gorgeous worn with a button up shirt underneath, especially in Fall. When temperatures start lowering, you can style it the same way but add ticker tights and a coat, or even switch that shirt for a sweater.

Coats are not your only option. Mixing tweed and leather in the same tones can give you a really gorgeous look. You should try it!

Other outerwear options include trench coats, and puffer jackets. You can wear a trench coat with heels or boots. As for the puffer jackets, you can style your short tweed dress with flat boots and even loafers.

I will show you a few ways to style this warm Winter dress below. But first let me share three perfect tweed dresses for your closet.
