Summer is nearly over if you’re reading this right before you return to school, which means it’s time to think about your back to school teacher outfits and ease into fall mode.
I get how doing that right at the end, or even in the middle of your precious summer break isn’t exactly easy, and that’s why I’m here to help.
The first few outfits back are often the hardest to put together: you’d rather be in a sundress heading to the beach, and the weather is still very much in transition. So I’ve put together a variety of outfit ideas that take you from late summer through fall, with a focus on layering, elevating basics, and looking effortlessly chic without sacrificing comfort.
For inspiration, I’ve naturally looked to Italian style — because no one does elevated, everyday dressing quite like the Italians. Tailored yet relaxed, polished without trying too hard, it’s exactly the kind of energy a teacher’s wardrobe should have.
That’s precisely why I have put together a variety of outfit ideas going from end of summer to fall, focusing on layering, elevating basic pieces, and putting together comfortable outfits that also look very chic and put together.
After all, a teacher doesn’t only teach a subject. She also sets an example, and the way she presents herself can inspire students to take pride in how they carry themselves too — something Italians have always understood exceptionally well.

Why Italian Style Works So Well for Teacher Outfits
Italian style has a way of making everyday dressing feel intentional without ever looking overdone. It’s built on clean tailoring, effortless layering, and timeless pieces that always feel appropriate — exactly what makes it so perfect for teacher outfits.
As educators, you spend long days moving between classrooms, standing, teaching, and staying presentable through it all. Italian-inspired dressing fits naturally into that rhythm because it prioritizes ease without losing structure or polish.
That’s why this guide brings together 20 teacher outfit ideas inspired by that same approach — simple, elevated looks you can actually wear through a full school day.
Late Summer Teacher Outfits for the First Days Back
Most of you start school back in August or early September. That’s still Summer to us Italians.
So what do you wear?
Rather than thinking of elevating your summer cotton dresses, which you totally could, I am suggesting something different.
Keep your summer dresses for your weekends.
That way, you will have a clear wardrobe separation before work and fun.
Instead, you’re going to create a back to school capsule wardrobe with these essential work clothing pieces:
- tailored trousers – think structured cigarette pants, suit pants, and wide leg pants;
- shirts – cotton button ups and silk fabrics;
- lighter knits and cardigans – I am referring to short sleeve cashmere cotton blend tshirts, soft three-quarters cardigans, fine crew neck jumpers, and sleeveless knits;
- flat footwear – think loafers, flat slingback shoes, mary janes, which you can wear without socks or with sheer knee-high socks and no-show socks.
Note: these pieces can also work for most back to work outfits that need to be elevated, chic, but not overly dressed up. Think office workers as opposed to lawyers and big companies executives.
However, it’s that slightly preppy school vibe that makes these incredibly beautiful for teachers.
Now that you know which pieces you’re going to use, here are the type of outfit ideas I would suggest putting together and wearing for the first few weeks, to a month of your school year – late August to early October (depending on how warm or cold it gets where you are).

My tips:
This is what you suggest doing.
Go back up and scroll through the six outfits I just shared.
See which ones you like and which you don’t. Ask yourself why.
If that’s the color palette, no problem. You choose your colors, based on your color season (Read more here), what you like, and the items that are already in your closet.
If it’s the type of shoe or bag, that’s easy to switch up. Swap it for your favourite flats and bag combo. Matching bag and shoes is not essential, but it’s the easiest way to make your outfit feel immediately more polished.
For the outfit ideas you like, you want to go and pull out similar pieces you already own, and play dressing up. You’re going to try to recreate them with the pieces you have and love first.
If that doesn’t work, you’re going to make a list of the basics you need. Start with those pieces that keep showing up in your favorite looks. It might be a new classic white tshirt, or a blue one. Maybe, you’d like to add a pin stripe to your collection. Or perhaps, it’s the short sleeve cashmere blend knit that got you thinking.
Either way, I have curated a collection of essential pieces that are perfect for chic but comfortable teacher outfits. Have a look and see what you find.
The best part about these pieces is that they are going to keep working even when the weather gets colder. They’re going to become your layering pieces. That’s why investing in them makes sense – the better quality, the more you can use and wash them, and they’ll still feel and look brand new.
Transitional Outfits With Knits and Blazers
For those of you who live in states like Montana or Vermont, the lighter back to school outfits in section one might not work because it’s already sweater weather.
If that’s the case, the outfits in this section will feel more appropriate. However, you can always wear the lighter outfits with a trench coat, a blazer or a lighter jacket on top.
For anyone else that lives somewhere where the chilly days only start from October, this is the type of layering you want to do when the new season starts trickling in.
Let’s talk about it.
Instead of layering your jumper over the shoulders, like the Italians are known for, it’s time to start wearing it. And this gives us the opportunity to create the most gorgeous teacher outfits with that preppy layered shirt and jumper aesthetic.
Here are a few outfit ideas.

You have a mix of examples here, from trousers looks to jeans, and even skirts.
And if you prefer layering an open cardigan, like outfit 4, that’s very effortlessly chic too.
Teacher Blazer Outfits
Early fall, or chilly weather (whether that’s early September or mid October for you) is the perfect time to start wearing your blazers to school.
Blazers are the first jacket us Italians wear when the new season starts rolling in, especially for work and in the city.
If you’re looking for new ways to wear yours, or trying to justify a new blazer purchase, have a look at these very Italian outfit ideas.

The first one is not the blazer and jeans or pants look you’re used to. And that’s precisely why I want to start here.
If you don’t like that masculine vibe, I want to encourage you to style yours or any new purchase with a skirt. A classic midi, or even a softer straight line skirt, works perfect layered under a blazer.
Layering it with a short or long sleeve knit (like these popular Tuckernuck pieces) is a great way to make your outfit feel less secretary like but still put together.

The next three are the type of blazer outfits you are used to seeing the Italians wear daily. They feature either jeans or a pair of tailored pants, a shirt tucked in, a belt, and a comfortable but sleek pair of shoes.
The blazers I am showing you in all three outfits happens to be very similar, which gives you an idea of how versatile it is.
I have both style one and three, but my tweed blazer is brown not green. I love them both and would recommend having them in your closet.
Here are two similar ones:
Blazer style 1
Blazer style 2

Depending on the type of teacher you are or the school you work in, you might want to have at least one suit outfit you can quickly reach out for when you have a more important meeting to attend. That’s a good example of one that doesn’t feel too corporate, and is a little more relaxed.
Trench Coat Teacher Outfits For Cooler Days
What’s one piece that you can layer over your blazer or sweaters, it’s not too bulky and warm, making it perfect for this time of the year?
It’s trench coats.
And the Milanese know it well.
Because October can be very unpredictable in Milan. You might have 4 days of uninterrupted rain, and then a week of sun.
The same holds for mac coats, so if you’re someone who prefers a more modern edgy less structured style, I suggest you invest in a mac, not a trench.
All of these outfits can look as good with a mac.

There’s something for everyone – one with jeans, a more colorful and very preppy outfit, and two dressier ones, one with heels and one with chelsea boots. Yes, it’s already boots time!
Finally, I’d like to remind you that shorter trench coats, even ones with more unique styles, like this cape outfit are also perfect for this time of your school year. And they are great if you’re tired of seeing everyone wear the same outerwear style.
