For those of us who experience truly hot summers, linen dresses are a foundational part of our wardrobe. The same applies if you’re planning a European summer getaway — whether that’s in Italy or somewhere further north, like Scandinavia.
If you’re in the process of bringing out your summer clothing and reassessing what still works and what no longer does, this post comes at the right time. We’re talking all about the best linen dresses for summer, the silhouettes worth considering, and how to style them with ease.
If it’s your first time here, I’m Alessia — the founder and writer behind Italy with an Italian. Here, you’ll find Italian-inspired fashion guides, alongside authentic recipes, travel itineraries, and deeper cultural insights.
I hope you find what you’re looking for, and perhaps a little more along the way.

The Best Linen Dresses For Summer & How To Choose Yours
Unless you have a clear picture of an outfit you’re trying to recreate, or perhaps you want to replace an old linen dress that’s seen better days, you’re probably thinking this: where do I even begin?
The easiest, but not the most effective way, is to start browsing online until you see something you like. We’ve all done it, and most of us still do it, right?
But that’s how you end up with too many dresses that don’t really fit your needs, or suit your body shape, so let’s take a step back and ask ourselves a few questions.
1. What do you need the new linen dress/es for?
Do you need it for daily wear, a summer vacation, or maybe even work?
2. What’s your body shape type?
Are you an hourglass, an apple shape, a rectangle, or a pear shape.
3. What’s your color season?
You can read more about this here. Basically, it’s about knowing which colors really suits you, and it’s nearly never the ones you think!
4. What’s your style (when it comes to Summer dresses)?
Do you prefer fun short dresses, more classic midi and A line options, or do you want something more modern?
You don’t need to take a long time to answer all of those, but do not think this is a waste of time. You’ll soon realize how worth it this is. When you shop with intention everything changes. You enjoy the process, and most importantly you enjoy wearing your new pieces so much more.
Once you’ve come up with your answers, it’s now time to start browsing. If you appreciate saving time, you can start by having a look at my suggestions below. Chances are you might find a winner among them.
My Favorite Linen Dresses For This Summer
I have carefully selected the best quality linen dresses that also provide great value for money. You’ll find more budget options, and a few more expensive ones, but nothing too excessive. Quality doesn’t have to break the bank!
I have divided these linen dresses into 3 categories:
- Short linen dresses (mostly shift style)
- Linen Shirt Dresses (classic A line, midi)
- Unique Styles
Why, did I do that?
Because that’s the best way for you to find one that suits your body shape, your personal style, and also your purpose/occasion. Many of them also come in different colors, meaning there are plenty of options for every color season.
As I list them, I will clarify which style fits which body shape/color season/occasion best. And you’ll also see a styling idea for each one. Just, keep in mind that there are so many more ways you could style each one.
4 Short Linen Dresses You’ll Love!
I am starting with the fun linen dresses because I think linen is perfect for more relaxed Summer outfits. That can be an elevated casual chic outfit you wear on a morning exploring Italy, but also one you throw on to go to the farmer’s market.
This doesn’t, however, mean you can’t dress up these style of dresses. You definitely can (see outfit three as an example).
These are the styles I selected, going from lowest to highest priced:

All these outfits are light and breathable. You can also see how simple the styling is. It’s all about the dress and the right accessories.
Best for: all body types can suit a shift dress; if you’re apple or pear shape, just look for more A line silhouettes.
The above styles come in different colors. I am listing the best colors for the four color seasons. These are not the seasons of the year, even though they use the same name! For instance, I’m a Winter.
Best for Spring: Light daffodil, Diamond blue, Poppy red, Ivory.
Best for Summer: Dusty pink, Diamond blue, Navy, Blue Pinstripe.
Best for Autumn: Ivory, Poppy red, Flax.
Best for Winter: White, French blue, Chile, Gingham, Black.
These 3 Linen Shirt Dresses Are Classic Staples
If you only want to buy one new linen dress, and your style is more timeless in a classic way, get a linen shirt dress.
I have selected three styles for you, ranging from just over $60 to $225, all high quality and with a classic silhouette. Option one has a modern design element that gives it a slight edge.
Style 1 (also comes in yellow)
Style 2
Style 3 (this is the budget one)

The outfit ideas are all slightly more dressed up but still wearable for the daytime.
Outfit one is an outfit you could wear for a creative work meeting, or even in corporate, if you have a more relaxed Summer dress code. Outfit two is perfect for a chic day of sightseeing. And outfit three is great for a Summer dinner.
Best for body types: A shirt dress suits all body shapes. However, you might not feel comfortable cinching your waist if you have a big tummy. In that case, an A line shift dress might be a better option, and so is style one below.
Best colors
For Spring color season: Citronella, beige, ecru, French blue.
For Summer: Sage, vintage pink, French blue, navy.
For Autumn: Chocolate, sand, driftwood, olive, beige stripes.
For Winter: Black, white, navy, chile, black and white gingham.
Looking For Something Different?
If you already have a linen shift dress and shirt dress, or maybe you have them in a different Summer fabric and are looking for a different silhouette, consider these two options.
Style 1: for the modern minimalist woman, still very chic.
Style 2: a modern classic midi dress.
In terms of styling, I have given you two outfit ideas that lean into the aesthetic of each dress. The first is very elegant and minimalist but in a modern way. The second is very dolce vita, with that blue and white color palette I know many of us love, especially in Summer.

Best for body types: This dress can suit all body shapes, but it might not be ideal for petite women.
Best colors
For Spring color season: Natural linen, light blue mariner stripes, grenadine, white and blue floral.
For Summer: Taupe, moonstone blue, soft yellow, white and blue floral.
For Autumn: Brown, flax, deep red, olive, beige.
For Winter: Black, white, navy, grenadine, white and blue floral.
More Summer Dresses Inspiration
I am positive most women will agree that dresses are that piece they reach out for the most. So it makes sense we want to shop more of them. It’s the same for me. If that’s the same for you, there’s nothing wrong with wanting one or two new dresses every Summer, as long as you actually wear them.
With that said, you don’t have to stop at linen dresses. Cotton dresses are another great piece to have in your Summer wardrobe. If you agree, here’s a guide all about them: The Best Summer Cotton Dresses & How To Style Them.
