1. Cigarette Pants

I am starting with my favorite piece, the one I think is the most versatile and could appeal to more women, whether your style is more feminine or on the edgy side.

Cigarette pants are considered a timeless wardrobe staple in Italian fashion, often paired with blazers, blouses, or sweaters for a chic, put-together look. They’re favored for their ability to elongate the leg and create a sleek silhouette.

They were popularized in the 1950s and 1960s, inspired by the slim silhouette of a cigarette.

You can dress them up or down, making them suitable for both casual and formal occasions.

Cigarette Pants Features:

Fit: Snug through the hips and thighs, with a straight leg that tapers slightly towards the ankle.

Length: Typically end at or just above the ankle.

Waist: Usually sit at the natural waist or slightly below.

Fabric: Often made from stretchy materials like cotton blends for comfort and shape retention.

Colors: You can find these in many colors, but the most popular are black, navy, beige, white, and grey.

How to Wear Cigarette Pants like an Italian Woman:

The options are endless, so I will suggest a few looks.

1. Cigarette Trousers + White Shirt tucked in, with a belt and casual shoes or heels

You can tweak that look by adding a jumper over the shoulders, or opting for a striped shirt, or a colored one.

In the colder months, you can wear a sweater over the shirt, and have the collar and sleeves peeking out.

2. Cigarette Pants + Fine Knit

You can layer this look with a blazer or coat on top.

For the warmer months, you can opt for short sleeves and lighter knits.

3. Cigarette Pants + a Feminine Blouse, and heels

The blouse can be sleeveless, which makes it especially appropriate for a more dressed up Summer evening look. Short and long sleeves are equally good options.

2. Crisp White Button-Up Shirt

If you only have one in your wardrobe, white is the best option. However, for those who love the classic Italian style, there are many versions you can collect with time.

In Italian fashion, a white button-up shirt is prized for its ability to serve as a foundation for various looks, from professional to casual chic. It’s a symbol of elegance and simplicity in a well-curated wardrobe; however, it must be crisp white and perfectly steamed.

Material: Usually made from high-quality cotton, sometimes blended with stretch fibers for comfort.

Fit: Can range from slim-fit to a more relaxed cut, depending on style and preference.

Sleeves: Definitely long.

Collar: Pointed, not rounded.

How to Choose a Good White Shirt:

Always opt for long sleeves because it looks more classic and it can be worn both with sleeves buttoned around the wrists, as well as folded. Make sure the collar is pointed, and that the shirt fits you well around the shoulders, and waist, and is long enough to be tucked in your trousers and skirts.

Details like nice buttons and some fashion elements along the neck can add to the quality feel of the garment, but make sure they still maintain the overall simplicity of the garment.

You can shop beautiful Italian style white shirts for every budget here. My readers love style n. 1.

How to Pair your White Button-up for an Italian Look?

It’s super simple. Take your favorite pair of cigarette pants or classic denim, and tuck the shirt inside them. Wear a belt, and add a pair of classic Italian shoes and a matching handbag. These can be casual shoes or heels. Add your jewelry and sunglasses and you are good to go.

The same can be done with both a pencil skirt and a midi A-line skirt.

If you want to layer for style or warmth, you can add a jumper over the shoulders, a blazer, a raincoat, or a coat.

3. Round Neck Jumper

This is a must-have if you want to add a little bit of Italian flair to many outfits. And the trick is to wrap it over your shoulders and tie it loosely. That’s the more common way to do it. However, you can also leave the sleeves hanging without tying them.

Even though the main purpose is to add style and interest to your outfit, you can use it as a layering piece when it gets cold.

You can wrap your jumper around the neck over these types of outfits:

If you haven’t yet tried it, there’s also the latest trend of throwing a jumper over your blazer or coat. If done well, this is really gorgeous. The key is to make sure it complements the entire outfit.

How to Choose the Color of Your Neck Jumper?

Whether your outfit is neutral or colored, adding another neutral that belongs to the same color family is a good way.

For simpler looks, you can add a pop of color with the jumper.

Make sure it’s a color that suits you, since it’s going to be close to your face. You can read more about how to find your best colors here.

And when you are wearing it over a jacket or coat, you could opt for the same color as your top, or a color that complements the entire look, as I mentioned earlier.

Important: Make sure your jumper has no collar, if you want to achieve that classic Italian look.

4. Short-sleeve Light Knit / Dressy Tshirt

These are almost the short sleeve version of your jumper, but come in lighter fabrics, and are used as an upper garment, rather than over the shoulder.

They help you create hundreds of outfits by just switching up the colors, and pairing them with different bottoms. You can wear them with jeans, trousers and skirts.

They are your classic t-shirts but the secret to that Italian look is to choose more expensive fabrics, like thick cotton, cashmere, and cotton blends.

You can even wear them under your suit, whether you are styling it with heels or sneakers.

T-Shirts Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Don’t choose a flimsy fabric or one that creases badly.
  2. Make sure to iron it.
  3. Don’t wear a see through one.
  4. Don’t wear a white one that has faded or it’s stained.
  5. Don’t wear printed Tshirts.

Printed Tshirts, although in fashion, are not synonymous with an Italian women’s style. Opt for solid options with neutral colors, or colors that complement your wardrobe.

5. Straight Leg Or Flare Jeans

Contrary to what many believe, Italians do wear jeans. They just style them differently than other countries.

Before we speak about how to style your jeans, you must choose the right pair.

The key is to choose a classic shape, and that will be different depending on your body.

Usually, straight-leg (mum jeans) and flare jeans – even just a little flare at the bottom – are the most worn in an Italian women’s wardrobe. But recently, the wide leg or palazzo style jeans have become very popular, both full length and slightly cropped.

Quick Tip:
If you are petite like me, you’ll likely want to choose the first style for casual looks, and then the other styles only if you are wearing heels or a platform.

As for color, opting for a medium-dark wash is the most classic option.

Avoid any cuts and tears, as those are not considered timeless elements within Italian fashion.

Of course, you’ll find brands that do them with cuts, but they are not good options if you are trying to achieve that classic Italian women’s style that looks effortless but it’s also timeless.

How do Italian Women Wear Jeans?

The most iconic Italian look is to wear them with a white shirt tucked in. You could opt for a pair of loafers, or a heel and matching belt to dress them up.

Jumpers, elevated t-shirts, blazers, and longer jackets like a trench coat are great layering pieces to create more put together looks that still feel casual.

Don’t forget you can add a pretty blouse and a blazer, wear a pair of heels and a nice handbag, and call it a date night look!

6. Black Pencil Skirt

Every woman, especially one who is Italian or trying to build an Italian wardrobe, should own a black pencil skirt.

It’s the piece you need for work, date nights, and even funerals.

Make sure you choose one that fits you well. Here’s how.

How to Choose a Great Pencil Skirt:

Here are some tips for choosing a great pencil skirt, focusing on length, waist fit, and hip fit:

Length:

  1. Classic length: Just at or slightly below the knee.
  2. Consider your height: Shorter women may prefer a length that hits just above the knee.
  3. Professional settings: Aim for no more than 2 inches above the knee.
  4. Proportion: The length should balance your overall silhouette.

Cinched at the waist:

  1. Look for a wide, structured waistband for a more defined waist.
  2. Ensure the waist sits at your natural waistline (the smallest part of your torso).
  3. The skirt should not gap or bunch at the waist when you sit or stand.
  4. Consider high-waisted styles for a more dramatic cinched effect.

Fit around the hips:

  1. The skirt should skim your curves without clinging or sagging
  2. You should be able to sit comfortably without the fabric pulling excessively
  3. Look for a slight tapering from the hips to the hem for a flattering shape
  4. Avoid horizontal wrinkles across the hips, which indicate the skirt is too tight
  5. The skirt shouldn’t twist or ride up when you walk

2 Classic Looks Italian Women Wear with Pencil Skirts

  1. Pencil skirt and white or other color button-up shirt, with heels for work. A blazer, a raincoat, or a coat can finish this outfit nicely, depending on the season.
  2. Pencil skirt and a matching top with a pair of heels for a monochrome look that can be taken from an elegant day to a feminine evening look.

7. Feminine Blouse

Whether you are a girly girl or one that appreciates more structure and less frills, we all need a nice blouse. You can opt for a feminine flower printed one or one in more girly tones, or go for a solid neutral blouse. The key is that it’s flowy as opposed to the more structured pieces I have listed above.

This can be worn with all the bottoms listed above, both for work, for a smart casual look, or for a date night. It all depends on the color, the print – if any, and the way you pair it, and dress it up with accessories. It can be sleeveless, short sleeved, or with long ones.

Here are a few ideas on how to style it:

8. Midi A-Line Skirt

Although not as essential as the pencil skirt, having an A-line skirt, preferably midi-length, can help you use those other upper body pieces I have listed earlier to create many more Italian women’s outfits.

It’s great whether you are curvy or have a straight figure. It will help conceal the extra shape for the first type of body and help add more shape around the hips for more straight figures.

The fabric is usually ticker to create structure, as opposed to clinging to your body which is what the A-line silk midi skirt usually does.

The preferred colors are again neutral, ranging from navy to creams but also greens and reds.

How to Wear a Midi A-line Skirt for an Italian Woman Style

  1. Wear it with a shirt tucked in for a more structured look.
  2. Wear it with a light knit and a nice necklace and heels for a mix of structure and femininity.
  3. Wear it with a pretty flowy blouse for an effortless feminine outfit.

All these looks can be dressed up, if you pair the fabrics and colors well, and choose the right accessories.

9. Flowy A Line Midi Dress Cinched At The Waist

A popular example is the shirt dress, which can be sleeveless, short sleeves, or long sleeves.

If you ask me which color, I would tell you that black is the most classic but it all depends on your skin tone and hair color. It’s good to have one neutral color like this tan one for this dress that compliments your looks, but you can also play with color and patterns when you buy your second and third pieces.

Read more about color analysis here.

Styling. As with all dresses, styling is really simple. Just cinched in at the waist, preferably with the same color belt, or a belt matching your shoes and handbag. And wear it on its own, or layered with a jumper over the shoulder, a blazer, or a longer coat.

For date nights or occasions, you can opt for a wrap dress that has a similar design to the shirt dress but is a more elegant and feminine option. Here’s a great date night/special event black dress.

Either way, make sure that the dresses fit you like a glove around the shoulders and at the waist.

You can find two similar styles here and here.

If you’d like to dress Italian-style, but you prefer a softer, brighter Mediterranean vibe, when it comes to color palettes and prints, don’t be afraid to incorporate lighter subtle prints, especially with A line dresses. Southern Italian women have done this for a long time.

10. Black Midi Figure-Hugging Dress

If you have seen many Italian movies or even looked on Pinterest for Italian black dresses, you surely spotted the figure hugging ones that emphasize the hourglass figure. Sophia Loren and Monica Bellucci love wearing these (see these types of dresses here), and so do many Italian women.

This type of dress can be a simple but phenomenal option for an occasion because they are elegant and understated yet when they fit perfectly they can make your figure and the accessories do the talking.

Of course, the fabric and cut are fundamental details of this dress.

You don’t want your dress to be light and see through. Instead, you want something thick enough to hold everything in and act almost as shapewear.

Structured shoulders are a great option if you want your black dress to be bolder and make a statement. Here’s a stunning example.

For the curvy ladies who don’t like to emphasize those areas of their body, a structured A-line dress, even one that’s shorter and shows some leg, is a great alternative. A great example is a shift dress.

Add the right accessories and you are ready to impress!

11. Trousers Suit or Tailleur

Nothing says Italian elegance better than a tailleur. Whether you wear it for work, a wedding, or to get married you will always be elegant and timeless.

So if you don’t have this in your wardrobe, consider investing in a high quality suit with trousers and a blazer.

You can opt for the neutrals; you’ll never go wrong with a black, navy, or nude color that matches your skin tone.

Or you can play with color. These colorful sets are perfect for casual days when you want to look put together but comfortable. You can even wear them with sneakers. I have seen many Italian women walking the streets of Bolzano but also Florence wearing it this way.

And they make a good travel outfit since you can wear the suit as one outfit, and then wear the blazer with a pair of jeans, and the trousers with a nice blouse for dinner.

How to Choose the Right Tailleur for You?

Other than color, good tailoring, quality fabric, and timeless design, fit is an important aspect you should pay attention to.

If you plan to wear it more casually, an oversized fit will be easier to dress up and down, as opposed to a more classic fitted option.

Alternatively, you could opt for a more modern take, with a shorter blazer.

Another important detail not to underestimate is the choice of buttons. Understated buttons are easier to style, both casually and for a night out, than when you have bold buttons.

12. Oversized Double Breasted Blazer

Unless you’re extra petite and can’t make this work, having this in your wardrobe will add a lot of flexibility and help you create countless outfits for different seasons.

This type of blazer is one you can easily pair with jeans and matching trousers, and can almost serve as a coat during the transition months.

It’s a great item for a work wardrobe but can be equally worn for a date night out with a pair of heels, or for a casual day of sightseeing with a pair of sneakers.

I found a similar one at a great price point; last few sizes left.

13. Black Or Beige Coat Cinched In At The Waist

This type of coat adds a touch of femininity to your wardrobe while still looking put together for work and professional events.

This is the type of coat you will find Winter after Winter at Max Mara.

The girly ladies can choose a classic long coat with a belt to cinch their waist.

And those who prefer more structure can opt for a coat with buttons that has an hourglass cut.

In terms of colors, I suggest you start by investing in a good black and beige. Then, you can consider adding a navy or a maroon, brown, etc.

14. A Scarf For Every Season

Italians love scarves, and it’s not only to tie them around their hair like in the old Italian movies.

Scarves add a beautiful touch of elegance to any outfit, as well as an extra layer that can contribute to added interest as well as warmth.

How do Italian Women Wear a Scarf?

  1. The most Italian way to wear a scarf is to layer it on top of your shirt or coat and leave it hanging down, without twisting it around your neck. This is especially elegant when the color and fabric of the scarf match the rest of the outfit.
  2. Another way to wear it is to leave one side hanging and wrapping the other behind one shoulder.
  3. Wrapping one side around the entire neck and then having both ends hang is another way.
  4. When warmth is the goal, Italians wrap their scarf around their necks or fold it in two and loop one end through the hole.

15. Black Leather Accessories Set For Winter

Of course, black shoes are not seasonal, but if you only buy one set, I suggest you opt for black. With set I am referring to a pair of leather shoes, with a matching handbag and belt.

The important thing to understand is that Italians don’t necessarily buy all 3 in the same place/shop/designer, but they make sure they match.

The leather color, finish, shine, and design have to match, and so does the hardware.

Once you’ve invested in this set, consider looking for these colors next: dark brown and maroon are especially beautiful when paired with Italian Women’s Style outfits in Winter.

Italian women style - tan accessories

16. Tan Leather Accessories Set For Summer

If black is the most appropriate and versatile choice for Winter, there’s nothing better than a tan shoes and handbag with your Summer looks.

Adding these alone will make your outfits look more Italian instantly.

Other great choices are cream, black, and a metallic option for date nights and special occasions.

Italian women style - brown mocassins

17. Leather Moccasins

If ballerinas make your outfit look French, moccasins give it an Italian flair.

Once you’ve completed your leather sets in your 2 neutrals, consider investing in a moccasin in black and tan for both seasons. These will come in handy during the transition months in Fall and Spring.

Make sure you match your hardware to your existing belt and handbag, or go with a full leather loafer, to avoid that issue.

You can wear moccasins with cigarette trousers, jeans, and even skirts and dresses.

18. Pair of Sandals With Medium Wide Heel

If you follow my advice and get yourself a tan leather set with shoes, a bag, and a belt, I suggest you opt for tan sandals with this type of heel.

These make the most comfortable heel option, and can also be worn for work, a day of errands, and casual evenings out.

Other than your tan, however, you’ll likely need another color. This could be black or a more fun one for Summer. Just make sure it matches your wardrobe and accessories.

19. Pair of Stiletto Heels

Black stilettos are a must-have in every woman’s wardrobe, especially when trying to channel Italian women’s style.

How tall or short the heel is depends on your ability to walk in them. Usually, the taller the more elegant, but there should always be a balance between looking good and being comfortable, even with stilettos!

Please, forget the thick platforms. Italians consider them tacky. And if you’re thinking you’ve seen Italians wearing them, it’s likely the younger girls copying the foreigners, rather than sticking to Italian buon tono (bon ton).

If you get a lot of wear out of these, consider investing in a nude pair too.

20. Pair of White Trainers

If you like wearing trainers on a day of running errands or a travel day, a white pair of leather trainers is the best option. They are comfortable, at least after you break them in, and look good with most casual to smart casual outfits.

I have seen women wearing beautiful outfits featuring trainers from North to South, and the common characteristic was that they were nearly always white.

Designer shops like Prada have great designs, but you don’t need to break the bank. Italian sneaker brands like Fila and Puma have nice designs too.

Striking a balance between comfort and looking good when it comes to wearing this type of shoe can be difficult, especially if you are petite. If you find that challenging, read this next: How To Nail Italian Casual Wear.

Final Italian Wardrobe Tips

With this list of Italian Women’s Style essentials, you will be good to go whether you are packing for Italy, attending an Italian event, hosting an Italian dinner, or just dressing more Italian style.

Remember, you don’t have to buy them all at once. Just start investing in the pieces you are likely to wear the most, depending on the season and your personal style.

I would suggest starting with accessories – shoes, handbags and belts. That’s because these can be easily incorporated into your current wardrobe, and styled with your pair of jeans, trousers, and skirts.

With time, you can replace those clothing pieces with Italian ones – and by that I mean Italian branded clothes, but also pieces with high quality fabrics and a tailored cut.
