Defining the Italian Makeup Aesthetic

Italian makeup, much like the culture it stems from, is all about balance. It combines a curated appearance with a natural vibe, celebrating individuality while maintaining a polished look. While there are varying styles, from minimalistic to bold, they share one key principle: they are never overdone.

Italian makeup feels harmonious, designed to enhance rather than overwhelm. It works in tandem with outfits, hairstyles, and accessories, ensuring that the overall look is cohesive and elegant. Some hallmarks include:

Whether bold or understated, Italian makeup always feels timeless and versatile, perfectly complementing the wearer’s features and lifestyle.

4 Italian Makeup Brands To Check Out

Italian makeup is not on par with Italian fashion. That doesn’t mean it isn’t good but it’s not as popular as international brands like Mac, Charlotte Tilbury, Nars, etc.

If you have come here hoping to find specific makeup brand recommendations, here are four which you should look into:

Diego dalla Palma – One of the oldest and most established Italian makeup brands, Diego dalla Palma is known for its professional quality and elegant, timeless aesthetic. With its sleek black packaging and high-performance formulas, it’s a go-to for those who love refined, classic beauty with a touch of Italian sophistication.

Pupa Milano – This is the makeup brand I grew up with—my mum mostly used Pupa, and I have vivid memories of playing with her eyeshadow palettes and lipsticks in the brand’s iconic red casing. Pupa blends playful packaging with quality formulas, and is especially loved for its bold mascaras, shimmering shadows, and seasonal limited editions that feel like collector’s pieces.

Kiko Milano – Probably the most internationally recognized Italian makeup brand, Kiko offers trendy, affordable products with surprisingly good performance. Think of it as fast fashion for beauty—with constant new launches and limited collections that keep things exciting.

Wycon – Similar in price point to Kiko, Wycon is a bit more edgy and experimental. It’s a favorite for bold lip colors, vibrant eyeshadows, and trend-driven collections—all while staying super budget-friendly.

My Go To Italian Makeup Look

I thought I would end this post with an example of what an everyday makeup look looks like for me.

I have always gravitated towards a natural no makeup aesthetic. The idea is to achieve a polished look while still letting my skin breathe and be seen. Having a very porcelain complexion, makeup helps me inject some color and glow while still embracing my skin tone.

My go-to makeup routine includes these steps:

  1. Cleansing my face, but skipping skincare. I find makeup doesn’t sit well on skincare for me.
  2. Applying sun lotion, even in Winter.
  3. Putting a bit of concealer in the eye area.
  4. Adding two eye shadows – one all over the lid and one in the crease. I will sometimes add a shimmer in the centre.
  5. Applying a thin layer of BB cream of light foundation.
  6. Filling in my eyebrows with a pencil.
  7. Finishing with a translucent setting powder.
  8. Adding a much needed blush, usually in a pink shade.
  9. Applying some eye lashes gel, either clear or brown.
  10. Putting on a moisturizing lipstick. My favourite by Ere Perez was discontinued, but I do love Ilia.

I don’t contour, as I have tried but I think it looks awkward on me with my fair skin tone, plus it’s an added step. I have also never use eye lashes curlers, nor fake lashes.

If you are wondering, for special occasions my makeup routine stays the same. I just try to apply more eyeshadow and use an eye liner to emphasize the eyes.

What’s In My Italian Makeup Bag

In my opinion, Italian makeup is more about the style than the brands. I can guarantee that 90% of Italian women have plenty of non-Italian beauty favorites in their makeup bags—and I’m no different. In fact, I’m pretty sure there isn’t a single Italian brand in my current collection right now.

If you are curious which are my current makeup products, I have shared them below. Please note that they include affiliate links, which help support this blog at no extra cost to you.
