Trench coats are the best transition-season piece you can invest in. And since you’re here, you already know that.
Like me, you probably take yours out in spring and fall, and maybe even pack it for an early or late summer trip. It’s stylish, warm without being bulky, and if you picked a good one, rainproof too. If you live somewhere the temperature barely swings, yours might just live on your shoulders all year long.
So the real question isn’t whether to wear a trench coat. It’s how to style a trench coat so it doesn’t look like you’re just throwing on outerwear.
That’s exactly what this post is for. I’m breaking down 19 stunning trench coat outfits straight from the streets of Milan, starting with fall, then easing into spring, so you can see exactly how Italian women make this classic piece look effortless.
Let’s get into it.

Fall Trench Coat Outfits from Milan
The All-Black Classic
What’s the most classic Italian trench coat outfit you can think of? Of course is all black underneath? I have done this many times. What about you? If black is part of your color season palette, this is a great one to try towards mid to end Fall.
Don’t know your color season?

Outfit details I’d like to highlight:
- Cinched waist
- Cropped pants
- The right height of boots to show the perfect amount of leg
- A pop of color with the bag

Same Black, Softer Mood
Outfit number one was very masculine, though the cinched waist and the cute bag helped soften it a little.
I want to remind you that you can create a bold but feminine look by simply switching to a black dress and more feminine flats. It’s still an all black look under a trench coat, but the vibe changes completely. This is perfect for the end of summer or a warmer fall day. If black is your color, you can also repeat this outfit in Spring.
Outfit highlights:
- The oversized lighter trench coat is perfect here
- Open trench coat, not cinched (worn like a mac coat)
- Play with heights – matching dress and trench coat length is very chic
- Pointed flat slingbacks add elegance
- The oversized tote bag completes the look perfectly.

Feminine Meets a Little Edge
Outfit three shows that a trench coat can be good for any woman, even one that loves feminine mixed with rock edgy. That’s the only way I can describe this outfit.
In reality, if you were to swap the shoes, this is a very classic outfit. You could wear it with a white shirt and heels to work, and even add a neck scarf.
I am going to skip the highlights for this one, as I can’t tell you I love those shoes and socks, plus I think there are so many more ways to style a trench coat. But, as always, I like to show you a little bit of everything, so you can curate your own style.

Cropped Trousers, Office Ready
The next one is another very classic Italian trench coat outfit. Cropped black pants with a little flare, classic blue shirt, the trench coat and a cross body bag. The woman looks like she is shopping, but you could easily swap the bag for a work bag and wear this to the office. The loafers are the perfect shoes for this.
Outfit highlights:
- Classic fall color palette – black, beige, blue and burgundy
- Perfect pants fit and crop
- The trench coat is ideal for the woman’s petite height.
- The shoes couldn’t be better.

Burgundy Trousers and Velvet Loafers
Speaking of burgundy, do you have a pair of pants you’d like to style with your trench coat? Here’s a simple way a Milanese woman does it. Burgundy cigarette pants, black velvet loafers, a black knit, a cool tone trench coat, and a black bag.
Do you like it?
Outfit highlights:
- Perfect pants crop
- Those velvet loafers make the outfit.
- The stone trench coat goes really well with the burgundy.
- The cinched in waist makes it more classic.
Are you noticing how most Milanese women prefer wearing their trench coat buttoned up and cinched?
I am pretty sure that’s not because of the weather, but more because that’s how you let the trench coat shine. It was meant to be worn this way, and when you leave it open you’re losing all those details and the beautiful shape it creates. Having said that, I do love an open trench coat, which makes me think I need a mac coat!
Do you have one?

Stone Tones, a French Touch
Enough dark colors! The next two outfits I’m about to show you are ideal for someone who loves wearing lighter colors. Again, we’re looking at a stone trench coat. And this outfit is very Milan chic, although those shoes give it a little French vibe. You can easily swap them for loafers or slingbacks, if French fashion isn’t your thing.
Outfit highlights:
- The outfit shades don’t match but pair well.
- The stone white pants are the contrast this outfit needs.
- The same holds for the black shoes and bag.
- The roll neck gives it a very chic woman vibe.
- This trench coat is one of my favorites.
Long Shorts and Chunky Boots
Want to see what a cool Milan girl who loves embracing classic and trendy does with her trench coat? This is a great example.
She’s embracing the long shorts trend, keeping the rest of the outfit fairly classic, and then adding a slight cool edge with those chunky knee boots.
I wouldn’t wear it but I do love it. Would you wear it this same way?
Outfit highlights:
- The outfit works well for her taller body.
- The folded and layered sleeves make the look feel effortless, not perfect.
- The bag anchors the look to feel more classic than it would without it.
- Those boots do exactly what she wanted with that choice.

Elegant in Black and White
This next outfit is a great one if you love an elegant classic Italian style, you need a dressy outfit for work or another special occasion, and you’re going to wear it with your trench coat, of course.
All black with a little white is perfect for transitioning out of Summer, but equally into Winter.
Outfit highlights:
- The sheer black tights complete the outfit.
- The choice of wearing closed pumps vs slingbacks is a great classic move.
- The stone trench coat goes much better than a darker beige one would.

A Summer Dress, Styled for Fall
I am not sure whether this dress is a Summer or Fall one. All I can see it’s that it has a light fabric, and it looks like a shirt dress, which makes me think it’s a Summer one with a fall color palette.
This gives us the perfect example of how you can style your Summer dresses under a trench coat, for work or not. Wear a sleek high heeled pair of boots for a very seasonal outfit, or closed heeled pumps for a more classic take.
I must say this is a little too classic and matchy matchy for my vibe, and I don’t love those boots, but if it’s your style, go for it.

The Trench-Mac Hybrid
The last fall trench coat outfit I have for you features a hybrid trench mac coat. Do you agree? It has the trench coat features (buttons and belt) but the mac coat style (oversized and A line cut). The color is also darker than what we’ve seen so far. I’d call it a tan beige. I really love this one.
Outfit highlights:
- I love how the woman is not afraid of stacking two shades of the same print.
- I like the layered effect this outfit has with the oversized boots tucked under the dress.
- And I love how the bags doesn’t go with neither of the pieces but it’s still perfect.
Now that we’ve seen all 10 fall trench coat outfits, can you spot your favorite one? It’s ok if you have two or more. List them all. Mine are 2, 7 and 10. I would probably wear number two, but I like how layered and more effortlessly curated those other two are.
Let’s move onto Spring.
How to Wear a Trench Coat in Spring
If you’re wondering how Italian women style their trench coat is Summer, the quick answer is.. very differently from what they do in Fall.
Here’s the vibe: trench coats getting shorter and shorter as the season progresses, lighter colors, plenty of slingback shoes and flats, and more leg out for those who can’t wait to wear their Spring dresses.
Let’s start with the longer ones.

All Navy, Perfectly Tonal
The first one is perfect for those women who love playing with contrast, no matter the season. The only thing is that this time it’s not all black, but all navy.
This is actually a color combo I have tried myself with jeans and a striped shirt. This woman is doing it the more classic way, yet, the outfit feels very minimalist chic and modern. I love that perforated design on the coat.
Outfit highlights:
- Perfect tonal outfit with a classic contrast.
- The open back shoes make the outfit more Spring appropriate.
- The minimalist shoulder bag completes the look.

Not Quite Ready for Spring
This next one shows the woman hasn’t fully transitioned into her Spring wardrobe. Here’s why. The dress and shoes are right for this season, but the trench coat color and length feels more appropriate for fall. And the bag is more Winter than anything else.
Outfit highlights:
- I like the feminine style of the outfit.
- I think the bag’s cross body style fits the outfit well.
- I also love how the trench coat color suits the woman’s warmer skin tone.

Still Dressing for Cold Milan Days
The third trench coat is even shorter and lighter, which is what feels more Spring appropriate. Yet the outfit underneath says I am not ready for Spring, or Milan is still very cold. In fact, the woman is pairing tailored wide leg pants with black heeled boots and a floral blouse in burgundy.
I am not saying this is a wrong outfit, probably great for a warmer end of March or beginning of April day in Northern Italy, but the boots make it look to Wintery. At least, the floral blouse is leaning into the season.
Outfit highlights:
- I love the fit of the trench.
- The outfit is a great one for the office.
- The trousers look like they are a lighter fabric, so the boots are either a practical (rainy day) or style choice.

A Lighter Dress, A Shorter Trench
Here’s another way to start wearing your lighter dresses in Spring, even though this one happens to be a plum one. You wear them with a shorter and lighter trench and pair them with a strappy pair of heels, not necessarily sandals but one that shows more foot cleavage.
Outfit highlights:
- A very feminine outfit that shows the woman knows how to dress for her curves.
- I love that pop of red with the shoes.
- The cooler toned trench is definitely the better option here.

The Trench Blazer
I am not sure whether to call this a trench or a blazer. It has the style of a trench on top and the length of a blazer. Let’s call it the trench blazer.
If you needed an idea on how to style your darker beige trench with white, here it is. I think the choice of adding the burgundy loafers is an interesting one, could be different but it works either way. It also reminds us that not every Italian woman matches her accessories, and that’s ok.
Outfit highlights:
- The outfit has more masculine lines but it’s well contrasted.
- The frilled shirt is the feminine piece.
- The top handle bag contributes to adding more femininity.
Short Trenches, Styled Casually
The next four outfits are all short to cropped trench coats styled more casually, which is why I am going to group them all together.
Tell me, which one would you wear?

I am not so sold on the last one. It’s too casual, but I can see how it could make a really comfortable Spring travel outfit or even a college one.
The first three are much more my style – casual but still with an element of tailoring. That interesting cropped trench makes that outfit (outfit 2), but I wouldn’t wear it. Would you?
Outfit highlights for those two:
- The oversized baggy look is done well. The cropped sleeve that shows the arm is much needed. (outfit 1)
- I like the tonal stone and white palette. (outfit 1)
- The shoe choice feels a little too French with the black toe cap but it shows the woman knows her style. (outfit 1)
- Outfit 2 strongest point is the play on structure. Both pants and trench feel very architectural, and the loafers complete that look perfectly.
- Outfit 3 feels like a casual tailored set perfect for late Spring, early Summer. But is it even a trench coat if it has short sleeves?
Trench Coat Outfits with Jeans
Are you asking yourself where the jeans are.
I know I haven’t shown you any trench coat outfits with jeans, but it’s simply because I didn’t spot any.
So, instead I’m going to leave you with all the jeans and trench outfits I have shared in other posts. Enjoy.

If you answered jeans and a shirt, you’re correct. It’s the most classic outfit there is, though maybe a little less common in Milan. That’s why I am going to link to these two guides for you to get inspired:
