The Best Hairstyles For Women Over 50 (Spotted in Milan)

By

|

I will never stop saying that the chicest Italian women are well beyond their 50’s and this post definitely proves that.

If you’re looking for a new hairstyle to try in your 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, or beyond, I’ve curated the best 25 hairstyles for women over 50 I spotted on the streets of Milan.

Classy, put together, with styles that range from more practical, natural everyday looks to more polished fresh from the salon styles.

Let’s see them together.

Best Hairstyles For Aging Gracefully

Before looking at the hairstyles, I’d like to discuss the topic of hair and aging gracefully. You likely have questions, and opinions around this, and so do I. So, let’s chat about it.

The best way to reply to my articles is to join my Italian newsletter – Buona Settimana (you can do that through the boxes on this page) and send me an email. I reply to every one of them, and I always love starting a conversation with the lovely readers that reach out. I hope to see you there.

What’s the most typical hairstyle for Italian women over 50?

There’s no one typical hairstyle, because it all depends on hair texture, color, length and style within that length. However, I can tell you that most women over 50, and certainly over 60, tend to lean towards shorter haircuts – think bobs, pixie hairstyles, and stacked cuts.

What’s the most popular hair color for women over 50 in Italy?

Many women in Italy have naturally darker hair, whether that’s brunette or darker. It’s fairly common for the average Italian woman to maintain her natural hair color over the years, even when she starts aging. That means she will likely opt to color it in the exact same shade or the closest available. Of course, in certain cases she might opt to add highlights, or lighten or deepen the shade, depending on what the hairdresser suggests and how her skin tone and features have changed through the years.

If you’d like to read more about how Italian women approach hair care, independently of their age, I have discussed this in my first hair post: The Complete Italian Hair Guide For Women.

Do Italian women over 50 wear longer hair?

Yes and no. You will rarely find Italian women (no matter the age) with extreme long hair, the kind that goes past your shoulder scapula. Of course, there’s always the odd exception.

The length of the hair gets even shorter with age. There are many reasons why that is so I’d like to point a few out:

  1. Italian women love short hair, so many of them have been wearing it that way all their lives. Of course, they are going to keep it short or go even shorter as they age.
  2. Short hair looks chic, and Italian women know that. Many might however not have the time and willingness to spend more time styling shorter hair, and once they age they might be willing to do it, or go to the hairdresser more often. That’s when they opt to go shorter.
  3. Shorter hair is deemed more appropriate for older women, not because an older woman can’t wear longer hair but because shorter hair is easier to keep healthy, and to take care of (in terms of washing and treating).
  4. Aging can sometimes shrink us, in terms of height but not only, and that applies to any nationality. So if you happen to already be a short woman, a shorter hairstyle will suit your petite body better. Sometimes, it’s not only height that shrinks, but also the face and the body size, which strengthens this argument.
  5. Finally, shorter hair can look classier and more put together, especially when styled correctly. The blowout can be maintained longer, and Italian women who go to the hairdresser weekly appreciate that about their shorter hairstyle.

How to choose the best hairstyle for your age?

Start with answering these questions. Take your time. Perhaps, you might want to journal about this, so you can keep track of your answers now, and maybe revisit them in a few months.

  1. What’s your opinion on older women and short vs longer hair?
  2. What’s your current hair length – short, medium, long?
  3. How healthy is your hair – texture, color, fullness?
  4. How easy is your current hairstyle to maintain?
  5. What do you love about your current hairstyle?
  6. What do you dislike the most about it?

Now that you’ve got clarity on all of that, let’s go a step further.

Is there any specific hairstyle, and maybe color, you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t?

If you already have an image, you may want to print it, and add it to your journal page, or keep a copy on your mobile.

Next, see if you find new hairstyle ideas you love in this post. Feel free to print or save those too.

When it comes to hair color, the best way for you to know whether your current hair color, or a new one you’re loving, suits you is to do your color analysis. If you already know your color season, you need to dig deeper and ask which hair color suits you, keeping in mind extra details like your sub-season.

If you don’t know anything about this topic, you can start here:
Simplified Color Analysis Guide + Steps To Do Yours

The final piece to consider is how practical or high maintenance you’re willing to go. Each hairstyle below includes details about this too.

Once you’ve asked yourself all these questions, spotted your favorite hairstyles, and considered your lifestyle, you should be in a better position to decide on the hairstyle change that best suits you.

Don’t forget to ask your hairdresser for her or his recommendation. They’re the experts.

25 Chic Hairstyles For Women Over 50 To Inspire Your Next Haircut

1. The Ash Blonde Bob

The style: A classic bob, cut just above the shoulder with a clean side part and soft, barely-there ends. It’s polished without being stiff — the kind of cut that holds its shape all day but still moves naturally when she walks. Simple, timeless, endlessly wearable.

Best for: Oval or heart shaped faces, women who want a low maintenance cut that still looks deliberate, a classic wardrobe with minimal fuss.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a bob cut just above the shoulder, with a deep side part and softly rounded ends, nothing too blunt or geometric.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry with a round brush to keep the ends turned under, and touch up the shape every 6–8 weeks so it doesn’t lose its clean line.

2. The Vintage Blowout

The style: Full, rounded, and glamorous; this is the blowout that Italian women have never really given up. Soft curls sweep back from the face with lift at the crown, echoing the elegance of old Roman cinema glamour, but worn here with none of the stiffness — just movement, volume, and polish.

Best for: Medium to thick hair, round or oval faces, women who enjoy a bit of styling time and like to feel dressed for the day.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like layers cut to support volume at the roots, a side parting, and ends left long enough to curl under for a rounded, classic blowout.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry with a round brush, lifting at the roots, then set with a large-barrel curling iron for soft curls. Finish with a light-hold spray to keep the shape without stiffness.

3. Sleek Pixie Cut

The style: Short, sharp, and full of confidence — this pixie is cropped close at the sides and back, with just enough length on top to sweep into place. It’s a cut with real presence: nothing to hide behind, all attitude.

Best for: Oval or heart shaped faces, women with strong features who want a cut that draws attention to the eyes and cheekbones, a bold, no fuss personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a short pixie, cropped close at the sides and nape, with a bit more length left on top to sweep to one side.”

How to maintain it: Use a small amount of matte paste or pomade on dry hair, working it through with fingertips to define the top section. Trim every 4–6 weeks to keep the shape sharp.

4. The Natural Curl

The style: Loose, voluminous curls that fall naturally from chin to shoulder length — no rigid ringlets, just soft, bouncy movement that looks completely her own. It’s a cut that celebrates texture rather than fighting it.

Best for: Naturally curly or wavy hair, oval or round faces, women who prefer to work with their hair’s natural texture rather than straighten it

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like layers cut in to lighten the weight of my curls without losing volume, nothing too short, just enough shape to let the curl pattern show.”

How to maintain it: Apply a curl cream or light gel to damp hair and scrunch gently, then let it air-dry or diffuse on low heat. Avoid brushing dry curls, finger detangle instead.

5. The Silver Wave

The style: Soft waves in natural silver-white, cut to just above the shoulder with movement throughout. There’s nothing severe about this cut; it’s soft around the face, with a gentle wave that keeps it from ever looking flat.

Best for: Fine to medium hair, oval or square faces, women who want a cut that feels soft and flattering rather than sharp or graphic.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a soft, wavy cut just above the shoulder, layered to add movement around the face rather than at the ends only.”

How to maintain it: Use a light mousse on damp hair and let it air-dry, or diffuse on low heat, scrunching gently to encourage the wave pattern.

6. The Chic Flick

The style: A shoulder-length cut with a signature flick. The ends kick outward rather than curling under, giving it a sharper, more graphic finish than a soft blowout. It’s confident and a little retro, without feeling costumey.

Best for: Medium to thick hair, oval or heart shaped faces, a bold personal style with a love of statement dressing.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a shoulder length cut with layers around the face, styled so the ends flick outward rather than curling in.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry with a round brush, rolling the ends outward as you dry. A flat iron with a slight outward flick at the very ends can sharpen the shape further.

7. The Textured Golden Bob

The style: A shoulder length bob with soft, textured layers throughout — not sleek, not glossy, but tousled in a way that feels lived in and easy. The layering gives it movement without needing a lot of styling effort.

Best for: Fine to medium hair that needs texture to look fuller, oval or round faces, a relaxed, easy personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a bob at shoulder length with textured layers cut throughout, not one solid blunt line – something with movement.”

How to maintain it: Work a texturizing spray or light salt spray through damp hair before blow-drying with your fingers rather than a brush, to keep the tousled effect.

8. The Side-Swept Bob

The style: A sleek, dark bob with a deep side part and soft ends that sweep across the face. It has a confident, polished edge — smooth and glossy rather than textured, with just enough movement to keep it from looking severe.

Best for: Straight or slightly wavy hair, oval or square faces, a sharp, sophisticated personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a sleek bob with a deep side part and soft, face-framing ends, glossy finish, not too blunt.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry straight with a paddle brush, then smooth with a flat iron if needed. A light shine serum on the ends keeps it glossy without weighing it down.

9. Romantic Copper Waves

The style: Loose, romantic waves in warm copper tones, falling just past the shoulder. The layering keeps the waves light and bouncy rather than heavy, giving the whole look a soft, feminine movement.

Best for: Medium to thick hair, oval or heart shaped faces, a warm, romantic personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like long layers cut throughout, past the shoulder, so the ends have movement and hold a loose wave easily.”

How to maintain it: Use a large-barrel curling wand on alternating sections for a natural, undone wave pattern, then run fingers through. Avoid brushing after curling to keep the texture soft.

10. The Long Layered Pixie

The style: A pixie with more length and texture than a classic crop — layered on top and swept to the side, with a soft fringe that frames the face. It has movement and softness that a tighter pixie doesn’t, without losing the short, easy shape.

Best for: Oval or round faces, women who want short hair with a softer, more feminine finish, an easy, low fuss personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a longer pixie with layers left on top for texture, and a soft, side swept fringe rather than a blunt one.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry with a round brush to lift the roots and sweep the top to one side, then finish with a matte texturizing paste worked through the ends.

11. The Romantic Bob

The style: A soft, wavy bob that falls just at the shoulder, with loose curls that give it a relaxed, romantic finish. It’s full without being overdone, the kind of cut that looks pretty whether it’s freshly styled or a day past it.

Best for: Medium hair, oval or round faces, a soft, romantic personal style rather than sharp or minimal.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a bob at shoulder length with soft layers throughout, cut to hold a loose wave rather than sit flat.”

How to maintain it: Twist small sections around a curling wand for loose waves, then brush through gently with fingers for a softer, undone finish.

12. The Modern Pixie

The style: A short, textured pixie with a slightly longer, swept-back top — sharp at the sides, soft on top. It reads confident and current rather than severe, with just enough texture to keep it from looking too neat.

Best for: Oval or heart shaped faces, women who want short hair with an edge, a modern, polished personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a short pixie with more length left on top, textured rather than smooth, swept back rather than to the side.”

How to maintain it: Work a small amount of matte paste through damp or dry hair, pushing the top section back and slightly off the face. Trim every 4–6 weeks to maintain the shape.

13. Shoulder Length Layers

The style: Long layers falling just at the shoulder, cut to move freely rather than sit in one solid shape. It’s an easy, versatile length — polished enough for a blazer, relaxed enough for a Sunday walk.

Best for: Medium to thick hair, most face shapes, a versatile personal style that moves between casual and put together.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like long layers ending right at the shoulder, with enough layering through the mid-lengths to keep it from feeling heavy.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry with a round brush for a smooth finish, or let it air-dry with a light texturizing spray for a more relaxed look.

14. The Wavy Lob

The style: A modern long bob with loose, undone waves and a deep side part — not sleek, not overly curled, just soft, natural looking texture that still reads current rather than vintage. It’s the kind of cut that looks effortless because the styling stays minimal.

Best for: Medium hair, oval or square faces, a relaxed, modern personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a long bob just past the collarbone, with a deep side part and soft layers to support loose, undone waves – nothing too structured or curled.”

How to maintain it: Use a texturizing spray on damp hair, then air-dry or diffuse on low heat. A light-hold sea salt spray can enhance the texture without stiffening it.

15. Chic Collarbone Cut

The style: A clean, straight to softly waved cut ending right at the collarbone, with minimal layering for a sleek, streamlined finish. It’s understated but sharp, a cut that relies on precision rather than volume.

Best for: Fine to medium hair, oval or heart shaped faces, a clean, minimalist personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a straight cut ending at the collarbone, with very light layering so the shape stays clean rather than choppy.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry straight with a paddle brush, and smooth with a flat iron if extra sleekness is wanted. Trim every 6–8 weeks to keep the line crisp.

16. Silver Layered Bob

The style: A layered bob with soft movement throughout, worn naturally silver. The layering keeps it from looking flat or heavy, giving the whole cut a lighter, more youthful bounce.

Best for: Fine to medium hair, oval or round faces, a classic personal style with a modern edge.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a layered bob with movement through the mid lengths and ends, not one solid blunt shape.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry with a round brush to encourage movement at the ends, then finish with a light mousse for hold without stiffness.

17. Curly Short Bob

The style: A short, curly bob that sits just at the jaw, full of natural bounce and volume. The shorter length keeps the curls from weighing down, letting them stay lively rather than falling flat.

Best for: Naturally curly hair, oval or heart shaped faces, a lively, low fuss personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a short bob at jaw length, cut to work with my natural curl pattern rather than against it, layered enough to reduce bulk.”

How to maintain it: Apply curl cream to damp hair and scrunch upward, then air-dry or diffuse on low heat. Avoid brushing dry, finger detangle only.

18. The Sleek Blonde Bob

The style: A smooth, glossy bob that falls just above the shoulder, cut with precise, blunt ends for a clean, polished line. It’s a no nonsense cut that always looks finished.

Best for: Straight or slightly wavy hair, oval or square faces, a sharp, put together personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a bob just above the shoulder with blunt, precise ends, smooth and sleek rather than layered.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry straight with a paddle brush, finishing with a flat iron for extra smoothness. A lightweight shine serum keeps the ends polished.

19. The Classic Chin-Length Bob

The style: A timeless bob ending right at the chin, with a clean shape and minimal layering. It’s structured without feeling stiff, a cut that flatters the jawline and frames the face beautifully.

Best for: Fine to medium hair, oval, square or heart shaped faces, a classic, tailored personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a chin length bob, kept fairly blunt with minimal layering, to keep the shape clean.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry with a round brush to curve the ends slightly inward, and trim every 6 weeks to maintain the sharp chin length line.

20. The Balayage Lob

The style: A long bob with soft, hand painted dimension running through the lengths, cut with subtle layers for movement. The graduated color effect adds depth to the cut without needing much styling to look intentional.

Best for: Medium hair, oval or round faces, a low maintenance personal style that still wants dimension and texture.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a long bob past the collarbone, with soft layers cut in to support movement through the ends.”

How to maintain it: Air-dry with a light texturizing cream, or blow-dry with a round brush for a smoother finish. Minimal styling is needed to keep the shape looking polished.

21. The Ash Grey Bob

The style: A clean, shoulder-length bob with soft layering and gentle movement. It’s a versatile cut, polished enough for the office, relaxed enough to wear with jeans, with just enough shape to keep it from looking flat.

Best for: Fine to medium hair, oval or square faces, an easy, adaptable personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like a bob at shoulder length with soft layers, cut to keep some movement without adding too much bulk.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry with a round brush for light volume at the roots, and trim every 6–8 weeks to keep the shape from growing out unevenly.

medium length haircuts for women over 50

22. Copper Layered Cut

The style: A layered cut falling past the shoulder, with graduated layers that build movement from mid length to ends. It has more shape and structure than a simple one length cut, giving it a fuller, more dynamic silhouette.

Best for: Medium to thick hair, most face shapes, a dynamic personal style that likes a bit of shape and body.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like long layers cut throughout, with the shortest layers starting around the cheekbone to build shape and movement.”

How to maintain it: Blow-dry with a round brush, focusing on lifting the layers at the crown. A light-hold spray helps keep the shape through the day.

medium length haircuts for women over 50

23. The Soft Chestnut Layers

The style: Long, softly layered hair with gentle movement rather than defined curls or waves, with a relaxed, natural finish that looks effortless. The layering keeps the length from feeling heavy or one-dimensional.

Best for: Medium to thick hair, oval or heart shaped faces, a relaxed, natural personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like long layers cut through the mid lengths and ends, kept soft rather than heavily textured, for a natural, easy finish.”

How to maintain it: Air-dry with a lightweight cream to smooth flyaways, or blow-dry with a round brush for gentle volume at the roots.

medium length haircuts for women over 50

24. Polished Long Waves

The style: Long, glossy waves with a defined, uniform pattern rather than loose or undone texture. The finish is smooth and put together, with waves that look set rather than natural, giving the whole look a more formal polish.

Best for: Medium to thick hair, oval or round faces, a refined, elegant personal style suited to dressier occasions.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like long layers cut to hold a defined wave, with enough length left to set a smooth, uniform curl pattern.”

How to maintain it: Set with a large barrel curling iron in consistent, uniform sections, then brush through gently with a paddle brush to soften and blend the waves into one smooth pattern.

medium length haircuts for women over 50

25. The Soft Black Curls

The style: Long, loose curls with soft, relaxed movement rather than tight ringlets, to give a natural, effortless finish that works well left undone. It’s a cut that embraces length and volume without needing much daily effort.

Best for: Naturally curly or wavy hair, oval or round faces, an easy, low maintenance personal style.

Ask your hairdresser: “I’d like long layers cut in to support my natural curl pattern, without cutting too much length off the ends.”

How to maintain it: Apply a curl cream or light gel to damp hair, scrunch gently, and air-dry or diffuse on low heat. Refresh curls between washes with a light water and cream mix rather than reshaping with heat.
