Where To Start With Your Bridesmaids Dresses?
Planning a wedding can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be if you tackle one thing at a time and get clear on each step before diving in headfirst.
This is exactly why before looking at bridesmaids dresses we need to talk about the rest.
Start with asking yourself these questions.
- Do you even want bridesmaids?
- How many?
- What type/age?
I think the best place to start is to think about that vision you’ve always had for your wedding, if you had one growing up.
If you don’t, you are not alone. I didn’t.
In that case, you can think about it two ways:
1. Think about the type of wedding you’d like to have, and what’s the best bridesmaids situation for that wedding. Look at Pinterest and wedding magazine for inspiration.
If you’d like a small intimate wedding, having a small number of bridesmaids makes more sense. But it’s not that simple.
You might have a short guest list, but still want all your favorite girlfriends to be beside you as bridesmaids on your big day. In that case, look at the next point I am about to list.
2. Think about the people you want to be close to you on your big day, the people you want to help you and support you all along.
It could also be younger people in your life you want to include. We call those junior bridesmaids.
This leads us to the next few questions.
- How many bridesmaids do you want?
- Do you want them to be your closest friends, likely in a similar age?
- Or do you have smaller nieces and cousins, usually teenagers, you want to include in that role?
- Finally, while we are only going to focus on bridesmaids in this post, you also need to ask yourself whether you also want flower girls, and ring bearers.

Don’t ask them before you do this..
Traditionally, the bride or her family pays for all bridesmaids expenses – including the dress, the accessories, the hair and makeup, and everything else that’s needed to be part of the wedding.
That’s what I did with my wedding. And that’s what all the four brides I have been a junior bridesmaid for did for theirs.
Of course, it’s a little different when you are an adult bridesmaid but it doesn’t have to be.
I think it’s a decision that goes beyond the age of your bridesmaids and one that’s more related to how you see your wedding, your culture and customs, your financial situation, and your own bridesmaid’s experience.
So, my advice is to first decide whether you are going to cover all the costs or not, and then ask your friends/family to be your bridesmaids.
That’s because you need to let them know what that would entail both in terms of duties but also in terms of costs.
There’s no right or wrong way to do it, although, personally, I am very new to the whole scenario of having your bridesmaids pay for the expenses. Until a few years ago, I didn’t even know this was a thing. I believe in Europe it’s usually always the bride and her family, or the bride and groom, that pay for all the wedding costs, and bridesmaids are considered part of those expenses.
If you still can’t seem to decide the best way to go about it, here are a few tips.
1. If you can afford it, I’d say pay for the costs yourself. After all, it’s your wedding.
2. You might, although you don’t have to, consider what your other friends did for their weddings. Were you a bridesmaid at theirs? Did they pay or did you?
3. If you can’t afford it, perhaps, you can limit yourself to just one bridesmaid. That way, you might be able to pay for the costs if it’s just one.
4. If you are set on asking your bridesmaids to pay for their dresses and everything else, the etiquette goes like this: If you don’t pay for it, you don’t choose it!
That means that if the bridesmaids are going to pay for their dresses, you can’t impose strict requirements. You can give them a few gentle requests, but you need to be able to let go of the control.
Can you do that?
Of course, if you are in a group of friends that have already been bridesmaids for other members of that group, and you kind of have silent rules, where you know everyone pays for their dresses, but you choose them together, that’s a different and very beautiful situation to be in.
What You Need To Know Before You Pick Your Bridesmaids Dresses
Once, you have thought about the whole bridesmaids situation, what you would like and how to go about it, it’s important you also think practically.
I am referring to learning about all the types and styles of bridesmaids dresses, what you like and don’t, the different brands available to you, the price points, and even specific details like length and color.
You can do this while you also evaluate the number of bridesmaids, and even before you ask them.
This will give you all the information you need to be able to know what you want, and also inform them of what to expect, or what to look for, if they are the ones who are going to be in charge of finding and buying the dresses.
In this section, I am going to summarize it all for you.

These are the 7 main things you need to know about and decide when it comes to your bridesmaids dresses.
- Length
- Colors
- Styles
- Fabrics
- Prices
- Brands
- Current trends
Style, length, fabrics and colors should be in harmony with the type of wedding you are having, your wedding theme, your other colors, the venue, your wedding dress, the bridal party attire, but also the time of the wedding, the season, and the type of ceremony and reception. You can also consider other factors, like the size of your wedding.
This is why I suggest you start with a clear idea of what your wedding day is going to look like, or what you want it to look like.
I have a guide that will help you with that, no matter whether you want an Italian-style wedding or not. Read this: Italian Wedding Inspiration For Your Big Day.
It goes through all the things you need to think about when you start planning your wedding. And while it gives you Italian-style wedding ideas, the steps are applicable for every type of wedding.
Once you have a clear vision of your wedding day, you will be in a better position to think about your bridesmaid dresses.
Here are a few key points to keep in mind:
Season: think about the season you are getting married in.
Venue: think about the venue style, any colors that stand out. Is it your home, a church, a villa, a hotel, a restaurant, etc?
Casual/fancy: think about which side of the spectrum does your wedding lean towards. Is it a more casual wedding or a more elegant and fancy one?
In the next section (the green one), I have shared my experience and all the things I took into consideration when picking my bridesmaid dresses.

Now, let’s look at the key aspects to consider when choosing your bridesmaid dresses.
Length:
If your wedding is in the morning, it’s more casual, or outdoor – a shorter dress is perfectly fine, but you could also go for a midi.
If your wedding is in the evening and it feels more elegant, curated and fancy, then a longer dress is ideal, but a midi dress can equally work.
I say, when in doubt, go for a midi dress.
Colors:
The second thing you should pick. or at least think about, are the colors of your bridesmaid dresses. For that, you need to consider the other colors of your wedding – flowers, wedding venue colors that you can’t remove or cover, seasonal colors, and the colors of the entire wedding party – your dress, the groom’s suit, the groomsmen suits, perhaps even the mothers’ dresses.
You might also want to consider your bridesmaids’ color season, and pick same dresses in different colors. If that’s intriguing, read more about Color Analysis here.
That’s how you can achieve a cohesive and harmonious looking wedding party, and wedding in general.
Styles:
This is the most delicate aspect. I suggest you think about what you would like, but also what would suit your bridesmaids the best. That’s why I love the idea of mismatched bridesmaid dresses styles. They are the same color, and usually length, and fabric, but the neckline and silhouette might change to accommodate each body type.
Think about it this way. To create a beautiful looking wedding, everything needs to look amazing, including your bridesmaids.
What’s the point in being fixated with a mermaid silhouette, when that’s not going to flatter half of your bridesmaids?
And if they don’t look amazing, that’s going to break that harmonious aesthetic you are likely after.
Plus, if they don’t look amazing, they won’t feel good, and that will likely affect their mood and the overall wedding vibe.
Fabrics:
The fabric choice usually comes later, as you are looking for different options in the length and color of your choice, but while also considering your preferred styles and budget.
Of course, you can be set on a particular look, like a sophisticated silk or high quality satin option, or a whimsical and romantic chiffon or organza bridesmaids dress.
If you are getting married in the Winter, you should consider thicker fabrics like mikado and velvet, especially if the temperatures go down considerably.
Budget:
The next very important aspect to consider is the general cost of the bridesmaids look you are after and what you can afford. Once you consider both your vision and your budget you can always find a way to achieve what you want within your means, whether that’s by looking for high quality rental options, or purchasing from a good quality lower priced brand, or asking your bridesmaids to pay for their dresses.
Brands:
The brands you are going to choose will likely depend on where you are located, the style of dress you are after, and also your budget.
Another important factor is whether you want to buy your bridesmaids dresses online (usually more affordable) or from a local boutique. There’s also the option of having them custom-made. The latter is usually the most expensive route, unless you have a tailor in your family that’s willing to do it for free or give you a generous discount.
Regardless of the option you end up choosing, knowing the most popular bridesmaids dresses is a good place to start your search.
So here’s a list of the most popular brands to help you get started. I am going to include different price points, but I am going to eliminate those that are usually really low quality.
These are listed going from low to higher price points.
US: Azazie (also Canada), Show Me Your Mumu, BHLDN, and Jenny Yoo.
Uk (also Europe): Asos, Monsoon, Dorothy Perkins, Reiss, Ghost of London, Maids to Measure, House of CB.
In the next section, where I show you different elegant Italian-style bridesmaids dresses ideas, I will include options from the brands above, but also a few other ones I think you are going to love.
Current Trends:
If you are going for a timeless elegant wedding you don’t need to look at trends, but you might want to. If that’s the case, here are the main ones to know for 2026.
Rich neutrals: Chocolate brown, cocoa, deep beige, and latte are trending.
Black: is still a firm elegant favorite
Satin: is dominating when it comes to fabrics, especially for the warmer months, although, with the right accessories and outerwear, you could make it work all year round.
Velvet: is a great idea for the colder months, and evening weddings.
Square neckline: more modern and comfortable
Mismatched look: is still a firm favorite, especially for a larger bridal party. You can mix and match colors, necklines, silhouettes, and even fabrics. I would personally suggest sticking to one main differentiator to still retain a cohesive look.

MY EXPERIENCE
To help you even further I am going to quickly summarize how I went through this entire process, and what I ended up deciding.
Type of wedding: small, intimate, elegant, Italian-style, family-oriented, a tiny bit fancy.
Wedding venue: elegant hotel rooftop with sea views, indoor and outdoor – ballroom and terrace. The ballroom had a bold carpet that I needed to factor in when choosing my wedding colors.
Bridesmaids: my sister and cousin, both junior age, each with different heights and body types.
Season: End of Spring, feels like Summer
Time of the day: Late afternoon ceremony, evening reception.
Bridal party colors: my ivory dress, black and ivory groom and groomsmen suits.
Once I knew the bridesmaids dresses colors, I also made sure my mum’s and mother in law dress would complement the entire wedding. My mum went for an ombre grey/charcoal gown. While my mother in law picked a royal blue one.
Flowers: ivory, whites and lots of greenery.
Ceremony type: outdoor terrace ceremony with seaviews, stone terrace, white and silver decor.
Reception: mostly indoors, finger foods and different buffet tables, with seating options.
The most pressing detail that definitely had the biggest impact on the choice of the color was that bold carpet I mentioned with different shades of blue, but also a few other colors.
My choice of bridesmaids dresses:
I went with a pastel slate blue that complemented both the wedding venue location (seaside) and interiors.
The color also went beautifully with the simple floral color palette, and my ivory wedding dress.
I chose long dresses but I made sure it was a length that was comfortable to walk in.
As for styles, both dresses had an A line silhouette, but my sister’s was an empire waist and one shoulder. That helped flatter her larger mid section and also cover her surgery scar.
For my cousin, I chose an off the shoulder A line style with shoulder caps that complemented her sweet young age but also made her feel beautiful and feminine.
I ordered these wedding dresses through a local boutique after choosing them from a large catalogue. Keep in mind that I got married 16 years ago, so things were a little different back then. I think that’s the equivalent of ordering them online now. However, the good thing is that the shop owner took all the responsibility for measuring and choosing the right size, and also doing all the alterations, and dealing with the order/shipping and timeline.
I believe I paid around €600 ($700 for two dresses), which wasn’t cheap 16 years ago.
If you’d like to order online, I suggest you look at sizes recommendations for that specific brand, follow the measurements guidelines, and also make sure you know your bridesmaids dress sizes well, considering the style and the fabric of the dress you are picking.
Also, you need to order early so you have plenty of time to send them back and get the correct sizes, if that’s needed. If the brand is available in a store nearby, ask your bridesmaids to go try a few dresses, even if it’s a different style. That way, you can understand whether the brand fits true to size, small, or large. If not, look at the reviews for that type of information.

They all have one thing in common. They are all elegant and tasteful, because that’s the basis for every Italian outfit and wedding.
And if you are thinking your casual, outdoor, small wedding can’t be elegant, you are absolutely wrong.
A bridesmaid dress can be elegant whether it’s short or long, red or black, chiffon or silk.
It can also be elegant while being simple or more elaborate, strapless or very modest, expensive or more budget friendly.
The important thing is that it fits well, it looks good, it feels good, it creates harmony, it’s timeless, and most importantly tasteful.
And that’s exactly the type of dresses that are Italian-style, and that I am going to share with you next.
So even if you wouldn’t classify your wedding theme as Italian-style, you are still likely to find a bridesmaid dress or three you absolutely love.

Satin Bridesmaids Dresses In Different Colors
This is a firm favorite with brides that are after an elegant timeless Italian aesthetic.
If you are also considering this style for your wedding dress, perhaps your second dress, I have shared an example in my wedding dresses post. Make sure to have a look.
The classic style is a more feminine figure hugging style, but this is a difficult one to wear, unless you are a model.
For that reason, I will be including different silhouettes and colors. I have already shared a few black satin options in the first section.
