Things To Consider When Picking Your Date Night Outfits

Whether it’s your first date or your two hundredth and one, one thing should never change – wanting to look your best.

Well, if you dress like an Italian woman, you are likely to be date night ready even if you’re going to the doctor..

Here’s what I mean.

Italians are known for overdressing and always wanting to look their best, and that’s the perfect starting point when planning your date night outfits.

But hear me out! The most important part is that you are doing it first and foremost for yourself, and only then to impress this new person you met, or your long standing partner.

If you start dressing for him/her as opposed to doing it for yourself, I fear that might develop into a bad habit later on — like one where you end up prioritizing their needs and desires over yours. And while many say that is what love is, is it really?

I believe that a healthy relationship is just two people willingly choosing to live together, but those two people are still two separate individuals. The more content and fulfilled you are on your own the more positivity and happiness you’ll bring to the relationship, at least in my opinion.

That also applies to how you dress for your date night. If you dress in a way that pleases you, you will feel great in your outfit, which will in turn make you feel more confident, happier, and much more pleasant to be around.

1. Consider your personality and fashion style

That said, not all date night outfits need to be super dressy.  Always consider your personality and fashion style when deciding what to wear. 

Don’t wear something just because it looks attractive. Ask yourself is that something you’d like to wear?, as opposed to – is that something he’d like me to wear?

And if you try it on, ask yourself this – how does this outfit make me feel? Is this my style? Is this something I am comfortable wearing?

Of course, if you want to push yourself outside your comfort zone, go ahead. But don’t go thinking that to look attractive you need to reveal anything.

If you want to look attractive you need to feel good in your skin before feeling good in your outfit, feel confident in yourself and what you bring to the relationship. Picking an outfit that makes you feel and look good on the outside is just the cherry on the cake, but nonetheless an important cherry!

2. Factor in the type of date

The second thing to consider is whether your outfit is appropriate for the type and location of the date. That means that a date night outfit can be dressy, casual, or somewhere in between, and that depends on the activity, the location, and also your personal style.

You’ll likely dress a little different to go to a movie and a pizza than you would to a candle lit dinner.

While there’s nothing wrong with overdressing, and Italian style actually encourages that, you also want to feel yourself while also feeling appropriate, so you don’t start getting in your head, worrying about what other people might think.

So keep that in mind when you choose an outfit. Make sure it fits both your style and the situation.

3. Consider the season and weather

The season and weather is another critical factor when dressing for a romantic night out.

Like I told you already, you don’t need to reveal too much to look attractive, so don’t worry if your first date night happens to be on the coldest night of the year.

Also, frankly, revealing too much on the first date is never a good idea. In Italian, we have this saying that goes like this – lasciare qualcosa all’immaginazione, which means to leave something to the imagination. 

At the beginning of a relationship, or even during the first encounters of a less defined situation with a person you like, coming across as reserved and mysterious can spark intrigue and curiosity. If that person happens to be the right partner for you, that intrigue will turn into a sincere willingness to get to know you slowly, because the more they get to know you the more they like you. That’s in my opinion the kind of strong start you want to aim for.

And while in Italian we have this other proverb that says — l’abito non fa il monaco, meaning the clothes don’t make the man (similar to the saying – don’t judge a book by its cover), let’s face it we all do it, we all judge the book by its cover at first glance. The same thing holds with appearances. First appearances matter. 

Being perceived the way you want them to perceive you will also help you get the kind of treatment you want to receive. So, if you want them to take things slow and get to know you mentally before thinking about anything else, be mindful about how you dress.

That’s not to say that a woman who shows a little more skin should be treated disrespectfully, far from it. It’s simply saying that you can use your outfit to set the tone for your first date.

Now that I have shared all that was on my heart, it’s time to look at a few examples of date night outfits Italian women like to wear. 

Italian-Style Date Night Outfit Ideas

In this section, you’ll find different types of looks, from more casual to dressier ones.

As I show you the various looks, I am also going to help you determine which ones have the potential to become your trusty go-to date night attire.

It’s very likely you already know it; you just need a little space and time to let that truth come to the surface.

How to Show a Little More Skin Elegantly?

The best place to start is here. Ask yourself which color and which garment makes you feel your best. Also, if this is important when dressing up for a date night, ask yourself which piece or outfit or style makes you feel the most attractive.

Then, you can go a step forward and ask yourself this: do I want to show some extra skin? For example, you might want to wear a shorter dress – not necessarily a mini dress, but maybe a midi dress, if you always wear maxi dresses or trousers.

Or do you want to show some extra cleavage, by going with a lower v neckline in Winter, or an off the shoulder dress in Summer? Of course, always keep it appropriate for the season and date activity, but also your personal style, to help you feel comfortable and confident.

Another way you can show a little more skin and add a little more sensuality to your outfit is by showing more skin in your feet area. That can simply be done by wearing a strappy pair of heels that emphasizes your beautiful ankle.

What’s Your Date Night Outfit Formula?

You also want to ask yourself this question – do you have an outfit formula that makes you feel instantly more feminine and sensual?

For many women, wearing heels instantly does that.

For other women who don’t tend to wear dresses very often, it’s wearing a dress.

For others, it might be wearing a specific type of dress. For example, for me it’s wearing a black dress that cinches me at the waist, especially if it’s also paired with heels, and more exposed shoulders.

More modern and edgy women might like mixing feminine and masculine elements, like wearing a pair of tailored trousers with a strapless top and a pair of heels.

Emphasizing your curves might be the way you feel instantly more sensual, and that can be by wearing a pencil skirt, or a body con style dress – think Monica Bellucci style dresses.

It could be that you love putting together an outfit that elegantly shows off your beautiful cleavage. That could be in the form of wrap style dress that hugs your curves and also plunges a little further down. Or it could be wearing a sweetheart top or a strapless top.

If you are on the opposite end of that spectrum, because you feel you are lacking in that area, and anything that emphasizes your chest makes you feel less attractive, let’s reverse that.

What if you started seeing it this way? Your lighter chest area allows you to wear so many sensual outfits a heavy-chested woman like me can’t. You can wear stunning dresses that show off your beautiful back; someone like me definitely can’t, unless I use some kind of uncomfortable and awkward bra contraption.

Perhaps you have a smaller chest but beautiful toned abs. If showing off a little skin in your stomach area makes you feel more attractive you can still do that elegantly. Just avoid showing too much, keep the rest fairly covered, and avoid showing the belly button.

After all, it’s all about showing just enough skin, and choosing where to show it. If you are showing your legs, don’t show extra skin around your cleavage. If you are exposing your shoulders you can show a little more cleavage, but it stops there, otherwise it becomes too much.

You Can Feel Feminine While Showing Less!

Let’s go back to the fact that you don’t need to show any extra skin to feel more feminine and attractive. So even women who love modest dressing, like me, can wear a date night outfit that makes them feel that way.

And if you are in that group, and you also dislike wearing tight fitting clothing, focus on the fabrics and accessories that can help you achieve that effect.

It could be wearing silk, or a little lace, or more leather, or even a richer fabric like velvet. Many Italian women also love wearing intricate tights to instantly feel more feminine. See the outfit ideas below.

Suits can also be a great date night outfit if you add a little silk camisole and feminine heels. This is especially a great date night outfit formula for ladies who need to go on a date night right after work. You could simply take the top and the shoes, and switch those up. It’s also a great one for anyone who wants a classier option, and equally perfect for women over 50.

Shoes are an important way to add a feminine touch to your outfit. Heels are the preferred way to do it, and strappy heels are the most sensual type of shoe. But so are high knee boots, especially when done elegantly. I think it’s because they emphasize the leg silhouette and help elongating them.

Roll necks are another very attractive garment, at least in my opinion, because they emphasize the neck, and that’s a very sensual part of the body. Keep this in mind for the next time you are going on a date night in the middle of Winter. Have a look at the next outfit idea. It’s one of the most casual date night outfits I showed you, but it’s still put together and feminine.
