11 Ways Italian Women Wear Comfy Fall Outfits

By

|

It’s fall or nearly, and you’re starting to crave those cozy days where you wear a comfortable outfit, head out in layers, stop for a warm drink, and see the world through a more romantic lens.

I get it. Most of us who love fall start daydreaming about those moments long before the first leaves start changing colors.

But here’s the thing.

The outfits that create that feeling aren’t necessarily oversized hoodies and leggings.

They’re the kind of comfy fall outfits that still make you feel put together, even on a cozy day. The ones you’d happily wear if you bumped into an old acquaintance, headed to your favorite café, or walked into a beautiful boutique.

That’s exactly how Italian women see comfortable dressing.

And the 11 outfits I’m about to show you are the perfect example.

Let’s get right into it.

What Makes Italian Comfy Fall Outfits Different?

I know this is a stark contrast from half of the outfits you see on Pinterest when you type comfy fall outfits, and that’s precisely my aim.

I want to show you that “comfortable” is not necessarily always casual, especially in an Italian’s mind. If you like Italian style, you might want to approach your relaxed days like this.

Not everyone’s style fits leggings and a sweatshirt, or jeans and a sweater with sneakers. Even if it does fit your lifestyle now, perhaps, you’re just ready to change the way you dress so you can attract the life you want.

Having said that, dressing better should never be associated with having a more luxurious life, or a more expensive house. You can dress better just because you like looking and feeling more put together. And you certainly don’t need to wait for the bigger house or car to do that.

These are the kind of outfits you wear on the weekend, or on an afternoon when you want to change after work and go run errands. Of course, they can also be your work outfits, if they fit the vibe of your workplace.

But that’s not it.

Here is a list of occasions these comfy fall outfits are perfect for:

Jeans and Loafers

Jeans and loafers are for most Italian women the equivalent of leggings and sneakers. The difference is in the fit and style.

Just because Italians are wearing a comfortable outfit, it doesn’t mean they are ready to lose the good fit and the aesthetic that fits their personality.

A slightly wide fit straight leg jeans, in a soft fabric, with a little ankle crop, and a pair of loafers can fit all the requirements of a comfortable going out outfit (it’s not a comfortable lounge at home outfit we’re talking about here).

Not tight, not itchy, no heels, you can wear socks, and it keeps you warm. What’s not to love?

Wide Leg Pants and a Cropped Jacket

If you love wearing culottes in Summer, or just adore wide leg pants, this is an example of how you can create a comfortable outfit with a similar style of pants.

I saw this particular outfit on a woman in her 50s, probably 60s, and it looked gorgeous. But I also saw a similar pairing on different Milanese women in their 30s and 40s. This shows that this outfit it’s perfect at any age. I actually remember wearing a similar one in my 20s.

The combination of the length of the clothing pieces, the bagginess of the trousers, the mix of casual and tailored, and the flat shoes, creates a more elevated comfy fall outfit.

You can try it with different color palettes, different styles of cropped jackets, until you find the one or ones that fit your personal style and lifestyle just the way you want it.

Overcoat Over Sneakers

This is another of those outfits I see on multiple Italian women. It’s really simple, they all are!

A pair of tailored jeans or pants with a slight crop, a pair of sneakers or casual loafers (like Tod’s do so well), a simple top, and an overcoat. In the example we also have a scarf and a nice bag.

Keep this one in mind next time you ask yourself: how can I wear my coat or trench coat in a more relaxed way?

Capes

Whether it’s too early for a coat, even a light one, or you want something that feels a little more relaxed and fall inspired, I have the perfect swap for you. This one is perfect for sophisticated women, whether you’re in your 50s or your late 20s.

You can immediately see how this outfit is very similar in color palette to the previous one. Italians love wearing their white pants before Winter starts, as most of us retire them until Spring. And the camel shade is really big in Italy, especially during Fall and Winter. Not sure if we’re to thank or blame mostly Max Mara about that :).

While the color palette is the same, the style is different. The trousers are wide leg and longer. They are being worn over boots, not sneakers. And instead of the camel coat, there’s a camel cape. The cape is worn over a knit, with a neck scarf, and it looks very comfy chic.

This outfit should make you ask these questions: does my fall wardrobe need a cape, or something camel? But also this: can I put together a similar outfit with a cape I already own, no matter the color?

That’s the type of inspiration I aim to bring you with my posts.

A Dress with Knee-High Boots and a Jacket

I know that Italian style, especially mine, can come off as a little more masculine and edgy, but there’s a place for femininity too. The next look offers you that.

If you like wearing dresses, even on a cosy fall day, with tights and boots, for an overall casual chic look, this fits that vibe perfectly.

A shorter dress, which could either be a straight line knit dress or a shift dress, a shacket in a nice cosy fabric, and flat over-the-knee suede boots.

It’s probably the type of outfit you’re used to, just a little more polished, because every piece has been chosen carefully, is good quality, and fits the color palette beautifully.

If you’re not a short dress person, you can simply swap it for a midi, go for a shorter or longer jacket or overcoat, keep the boots or go for flats.

A Tailored Knit Set with Loafers and a Nice Bag

Many women outside Italy, perhaps you too, associate autumnal days with cosy sets. Italian women wear them out less frequently, and when they do, it’s always intentional.

I have seen them wearing those sets on a flight or a long train journey, on a rainy day, under a trench coat or coat with nice sneakers. But every time, it looks polished. The bag goes perfectly, the set is well steamed, you get it.

But it doesn’t have to stop there. If a set, perhaps in a camel color, makes you feel cosy, it doesn’t have to be knitted or cashmere to do that. How about swapping the fabric and wearing it to work, or to breakfast with the girls?

I spotted the perfect outfit that does all of that. Have a look.

A Sleeveless Puffer Gilet Dressed Up

Puffer gilets are more popular among Italian men’s casual outfits. Occasionally, Italian women wear them too, especially when traveling or having an outdoor day with the family.

The outfit I spotted in Milan shows us that there’s a way to elevate your puffer gilet too, even if you’re wearing it with sneakers.

An Oversized Coat

We’ve already seen the oversized coat styled with the jeans and loafers in the first example I showed you, but we didn’t speak about it at all. I’d like to give it the attention it deserves here.

Wearing a coat can often feel like you’re dressing up. It can also give that classic vibe. If you don’t want any of that, which is likely going to be the case on a comfy fall outfit kind of day, try an oversized coat.

It still gives you warmth but it changes the vibe completely. It’s what the cool but chic Milanese women wear with sneakers, but you can easily swap the sneakers with loafers, or flats, or Chelsea boots.

Wearing an oversized coat with jeans is the perfect way to add more cosy fall notes to your look.

A High-Neck or Roll-Neck Top

A roll neck might not be the first item you reach out for in fall. Yet, if you live in a place where falls are colder, or maybe mid fall is, you likely do. That’s the same in Milan. Early fall can be warm, but it can also be very rainy and chilly. It all depends on what the weather decides to do that week, or even that day.

Italians love wearing roll necks to transition their fall to winter wardrobes. It allows them to keep wearing that blazer or lighter coat they love a little longer. It also means they can skip the scarf on that particular day.

Here are two examples that show how to wear a roll neck on a casual fall day, but for two completely different personal styles. The first is classic chic, the second is very cool girl vibe.

Do You Need A Good Quality Roll Neck?

Bonus outfit idea: if you want to wear your suit in a more casual, comfortable way, try wearing it with a roll neck and either sneakers or loafers. It especially works with suits that have a more relaxed fit, even better if slightly oversized.

A Jacket Worn Over the Shoulders

I know you’ve seen this done everywhere, and you probably think it’s the stylish women that do it. I am talking about the over the shoulder blazer,  jacket or cardigan.

But have you seen it in Italy?

Everyone is doing it, not just the influencers or the young fashionistas. Even the grandmas are.

While they might be doing it for the styling effect it gives their outfit, style is not the only reason why Italians put their blazer over their shoulders, instead of wearing it.

Comfort and cosiness have a part in that too.

Italians love being prepared for the weather, even if that means overdressing in layers, especially in the mornings and nights. We’re a little paranoid about not getting sick when the weather changes, I have shared that before.

So we might wear that jacket, but then, at noon we no longer do it. What do we do?

We wear it on our shoulders! It frees our hands, and it also looks great.

Of course, we might also choose to wear it that way in the morning, because we’re unsure whether we will want to wear it or not.

While you might think there’s nothing comfortable about a jacket over your shoulders, think again. Don’t you put a blanket on your shoulders when you’re lounging on the sofa in the evening and it gets chilly? It makes you feel cosy, doesn’t it?

Well, the jacket over the shoulders is the blanket you can take out with you without having anyone staring at you!

A Crossbody Bag

The final way I want to share with you regarding how Italians make their outfits look more comfortable, is not about the outfit per se, but more about the bag.

And this is something you can do all year long, which many of you already do.

But Italians don’t.

Think about it. When you see Italians walking on the streets in Milan, think about it..how many of them are wearing a cross body bag?

Not many.

It’s probably the toddler or baby moms that have to juggle too many things, and need to free their hands.

Perhaps, the ladies who are going shopping and have too many bags to hold.

You’ll also find that Italian women do that on vacation, both for comfort but also for safety.

Most other Italian women aren’t wearing cross body bags.

And that’s because a cross body bag makes your outfit look more casual, less polished, and it doesn’t fit the core aesthetic of Italian style.

In parole povere (in few words), as we say in Italian, wearing a cross body bag is a great way to make your fall outfit look more comfortable, cosier, and casual.

If you’ve never thought about it that way, now that you know, you can choose to do it more or do it less, depending on the style aesthetic you’re trying to create and maintain with your daily outfits.
