10 Reasons Brera Is Milan’s Best District

If you’re planning a trip to Milan and wondering which neighborhood to stay in, let me make it simple for you: Brera is unbeatable. This charming district offers something special for everyone—no matter your age, interests, or travel style. Whether you’re into art, fashion, fine dining, or simply soaking up Milan’s vibrant atmosphere, Brera delivers it all.

In this article, I’ll share 10 compelling reasons why Brera stands out as the best district in Milan, so you can see exactly why it’s worth your time (and budget).

1. Central Location & Great Transport

Whether it’s your first time in Milan, or you’re visiting with kids or family, have mobility concerns, or just want a central location, there’s no better neighborhood I can recommend.

Here are a few key distances to give you a better overview:

For your reference, I am taking Via Brera as the point of departure for all the above sights.

Thanks to its great transport system – including trams, buses and metro lines, you can reach the furthest sightseeing point on the map – Navigli, in just 30 minutes.

We stayed on a street bordering Brera, and here’s how we got around Milan, in case you want to replicate what we did.

  1. We landed in Malpensa and took the Milan Malpensa Express from the airport to Milano Centrale. Then, we took a taxi from the outside stand to our apartment near Brera. The train ticket cost €13 per person while the cab was around €15. We did the same on our way back to the airport.
  2. We did all our Milan main sights exploring on foot, except for when we went to Navigli.
  3. We took 2 metro lines from Duomo to Navigli, and just one back to our apartment.
  4. For our day trips, we booked a taxi via phone in the morning and had it take us to the train station. Then we took one metro line to come back.

Brera Milan

2. Historical Charm

If your idea of spending time in Milan includes beautiful historic buildings like Palazzo Citterio, cobbled streets, and charming alleys, then Brera is the neighborhood for you. Known for its deep historical roots, Brera is one of Milan’s most captivating districts.

The area dates back to the 14th century and was originally home to artisans and scholars. Its iconic cobbled streets are lined with buildings that showcase centuries of architectural styles, from the Renaissance to the Baroque era.

Brera’s historical significance is also evident in its cultural institutions, most notably the Pinacoteca di Brera (Brera Art Gallery), which houses an exceptional collection of Italian masterpieces.

The district also has close ties to Milan’s intellectual and artistic history, with institutions like the Brera Academy, founded in 1776 and has played a key role in shaping Italy’s artistic legacy.

Walking through Brera feels like stepping back in time, where every corner offers a glimpse into the Milan of centuries past.

3. Vibrant Yet Tranquil Atmosphere

You may have come across TikToks or Reels portraying Milan as a boring city, but I’m pretty sure those creators weren’t staying in Brera—or they didn’t take the time to explore it fully.

I’ve visited Brera at different times of the day, from early mornings to late nights, and across all kinds of weather—from gloomy, rainy Mondays to sunny Sundays. And in all those moments, Brera has never felt dull.

Of course, what feels boring to one person might be different to another. But one thing’s for sure: Brera strikes the perfect balance. The streets of Via Brera and Via Fiori Chiari are always lively, with people strolling, window shopping, or enjoying a meal at one of the many cafés and restaurants. Tourists are often heading to the Pinacoteca or simply soaking up the charming atmosphere.

What makes Brera special, though, is that it never feels overcrowded—except, of course, near popular spots like Osteria Da Fortunata on Via Fiori Chiari.

4. A Haven for Food Enthusiasts

I always think I have nailed choosing my neighborhood when I never want to leave, whether it’s for activities or eating.

Don’t get me wrong. There are plenty of delicious food spots you need to try while in Milan that are not located in Brera. You can find all about those in my Milan Foodie Guide.

However, if you want to have the option to get outside your hotel or apartment, and just walk 2 to 5 minutes to a great restaurant, Brera gives you that.

Here are my favorite food spot recommendations in the area.

  1. Princi in Via Ponte Vetero for breakfast
  2. Osteria Da Fortunata in Via Fiori Chiari (make sure to book) or head to the one in Via Moscova – just 10 minutes away.
  3. Il Cestino
  4. Maccheroni
  5. Gloria Osteria
  6. Cafezal Cafe

And if you have these popular food spots on your list, they are within a 15-minute walk from Via Brera:

  1. Luini Panzerotti
  2. Spontini in Via Dogana
  3. Starbucks Roastery
  4. Cova Montenapoleone
  5. Marchese 1824 aka the Prada Cafe inside the Galleria

I have reviewed all of them in my Milan Food Guide, should you want to know how I rate them.

Via Brera shops

5. Boutique Shopping Experience

Milan is known as the Italian fashion capital, especially areas like the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and the Quadrilatero della Moda. However, Brera is equally charming for its boutique shopping, especially along Via Brera.

I urge you to spend at least an hour strolling through Via Brera and stopping to admire each shop’s window. If you love stationery and art, go inside the Pettinaroli shop.

Pettinaroli, established in 1881, is a prestigious Milanese stationery shop located in the Brera district. Known for its high-quality paper goods, writing instruments, and luxury office accessories, it’s a favorite destination for those seeking elegant and timeless stationery items crafted with exceptional attention to detail.

Another lesser-known spot for boutique shopping worth exploring in Brera is Via Mandolina. This charming alley begins at Via Ponte Vetero and connects to other picturesque cobblestone streets, lined with well-preserved artisan studios and unique shops.

6. Perfect Streets For Strolling & Nature Bathing

Brera’s streets are ideal for a leisurely stroll, with picturesque cobblestone paths, vibrant cafés, and hidden courtyards around every corner. Whether you’re wandering along Via Brera, the charming Via Fiori Chiari, or the quiet side alleys, each turn offers something new to discover—be it an art gallery, a boutique, or a peaceful spot to relax.

The mix of historical charm and lively atmosphere makes it a perfect place to explore on foot, letting you take in the beauty and energy of Milan at your own pace.

Just a short walk from Via Brera, you’ll find a peaceful nature spot—the Brera Botanical Garden. While small, it’s an ideal retreat for anyone who loves to take a stroll through a garden every day. It’s a serene, hidden oasis where you can connect with nature in the heart of the city.

And for those looking to experience nature on a larger scale, Parco Sempione is just a 15-minute walk from Via Brera. Perfect for a morning run, it offers expansive green space and a more tranquil atmosphere, making it an excellent way to start your day.

7. Cozy, Homey Vibe

If I were choosing a place to live in Milan, and budget wasn’t a concern, Brera would undoubtedly be my top choice.

It’s not just because of the reasons I’ve already mentioned, or the ones still to come, but also because of the district’s cozy, homey vibe. Brera offers the perfect balance of tranquility and excitement, with quiet streets to unwind and vibrant spots to explore at any time.

During my 8 days in Rome, I always found myself looking forward to returning to Brera. It felt like home—a place you’re excited to come back to, where you can enjoy peaceful walks among little shops and charming cafés, yet never run out of new things to discover. It’s the kind of place that offers a sense of comfort without ever feeling bored, making it a neighborhood I’d love to call home.

8. Thriving Art and Culture Scene

Art enthusiasts will feel right at home in this district, not only because of the Pinacoteca di Brera Museum—one of Milan’s most important cultural landmarks—but also due to the presence of the renowned Brera Academy of Fine Arts.

The streets are lined with artistic boutiques where you can watch artisans craft their masterpieces, often visible through the shop windows, or catch a glimpse of their latest creations up close.

For those who love vintage treasures, Brera Antiques Market, held every third Sunday of the month, is a must-see. The market offers a delightful mix of antique art, vintage clothing, and unique décor, providing the perfect opportunity to find something truly special.

Brera at night

9. Lively Nightlife Options

Brera’s nightlife scene offers something for every taste, whether you’re after a sophisticated cocktail or a relaxed drink in a casual setting. One spot that will definitely surprise you as you walk down Via Fiori Chiari is Vesta Fiori Chiari. This new seafood restaurant boasts stunning architecture and an unexpected cocktail bar at the entrance. With its sleek, modern design and expertly crafted drinks, it immediately captures your attention, making it a perfect spot to begin your evening in Brera.

If you’re in the mood for something with a cool, industrial vibe, head to Dry Milan on Via Solferino. With its trendy, urban atmosphere and exceptional cocktails, it’s a favorite for those looking to enjoy a night out in style.

For a more laid-back, authentic experience, Bar Brera offers a relaxed setting where you can sit outside and enjoy a drink in one of the most picturesque corners of the neighborhood. Its welcoming vibe makes it the perfect spot to unwind after a busy day.

As you stroll through Brera at night, you’ll find plenty more hidden gems waiting to surprise you. Whether it’s cozy wine bars or lively cocktail lounges, Brera has no shortage of places to discover and enjoy.

10. Great Accommodation Options

Brera’s appeal goes beyond its vibrant atmosphere—it’s also home to some fantastic places to stay. No wonder Bulgari Hotel chose this neighborhood for its location. Nestled on a private street, right by the Botanical Garden, this five-star hotel offers an exclusive experience. The road is pedestrian-only, ensuring peace and quiet, and the hotel itself is known for its luxury, impeccable service, and stunning gardens.

Another excellent option is the Hotel Milano Scala, a 4-star Green Boutique Hotel that stands out for its commitment to eco-sustainability. As Milan’s first hotel with zero emissions, it offers a blend of chic design and environmentally friendly luxury.

For those who prefer a more authentic Milanese experience, I highly recommend finding an apartment in Brera. If you’re willing to step just outside the main district, you’ll still enjoy the charm of the area, while having the opportunity to find great, more affordable accommodation just a short walk away.
