Can You Wear Jeans In Italy?

I see this question come up a lot when I am doing my research, and I have already answered it before, but this is the right time and place to do it again, so here it comes.

Can I wear jeans in Italy?

Of course, you can, my friend!

First of all, it’s not like there’s a ban on what you can and cannot wear when you visit Italy. It’s more of a question of wanting to fit in with the locals, and being inspired by the way Italians dress and look at clothing. You might want that or not.

The worst thing that can happen if you come to Italy and dress like a tourist, is being recognized as a tourist, and maybe being looked at differently, but that only happens if you’re really doing something extreme – like showing too much, or pairing things in a very strange way. And if it happens, so be it; just own your style!

Back to jeans now. The same thing I just explained also holds for the way you style your jeans.

Italians love and wear jeans a lot, but in a totally different way than an American would, although let’s be real, and say that this is no longer always the case. Many Americans are now dressing as well, if not better than certain Italians do, but I get that you love Italian fashion and style, and you come here for inspiration and tips, so that’s what I always try to give you in my fashion posts.

4 Tips to Style Jeans Like An Italian (blue or not)

1. Change the way you see jeans.

I think the main difference between the way stylish Italians wear jeans and the stereotypical casual jeans wearer comes down to how jeans are perceived. For stylish Italians, jeans are another key piece in their closet, one which can help them achieve a certain fashion look they are after.

Contrary to that, the slouchy jeans wearer tends to see jeans as a no-brainer option, the comfortable choice, the thing they grab when they are getting dressed in the morning, without giving any thought about how it makes them look, how it fits, or how they should pair it.

If you want to wear jeans like an Italian you’ll consider them like a garment in your closet that must fit well, be the right shade, look good quality; plus, you’ll also want to think about how to style it. You’ll likely also want to have multiple options in your wardrobe – blue jeans, light blue jeans, baggy jeans, straight jeans, etc. You don’t have to have all the options, just those that make sense for your fashion style and lifestyle.

2. Make sure you have the right jeans fit.

Straight leg – cropped at the ankle, or long enough to cover part of your heel.

Wide leg – preferably on the longer side, but cropped options can work with the right type of shoe, and also with the right body type.

High waist – most Italians prefer high-waist jeans; and that usually holds for any type of pants.

Tight fit – if you are going for a tighter fit, it’s important you make sure they are not too tight, causing bulges, or making certain parts of your body not look good, or look too exposed. That’s why a straight leg fit that delicately hugs your hips and then drops straight to the floor, is usually preferred in Italy.

Baggy – very baggy jeans are not the most popular type of jeans in Italy, unless you are a cool Italian girl in your 20s. Of course, older cool people can wear that style, but it’s more difficult. However, the styles that have been trending later, with the slighter baggier leg, could work for everyone, depending on your style and body type.

If you are petite, or tend to prefer a classic more elegant style, I would suggest you skip this one. For all the others, especially if you are tall and love that effortless cool style, my only tip is to try them before you buy them. Try them with different shoes and tops, take a picture, and see how they make you look and feel. Do you like it? Then, go for it!

Wide leg – the best ones are those that flare at the right point and don’t have a dramatic wide leg. Those will stay in your wardrobe the longer, and can be paired with different shoes and heel heights. Again, I would always suggest a high-wasted pair of wide leg jeans.

I think that petite women can wear them too, especially if paired with tighter tops, and shorter jackets, maybe heels, but not essential. If you are not sure whether this style is for you, try them, and pair them with the kind of top you would wear with your jeans, try them with a flat shoe and a heel, with a jacket or a coat, and then see how you feel and look.

3. Invest in quality jeans that make you feel great.

The reason why Italians look so good when they are dressed well is their confidence in what they are wearing. And you can’t feel confident wearing something that feels cheap and doesn’t fit you well.

Now, hear me carefully please. I am not saying that a low-cost garment can’t make you feel like a million bucks. It’s not about the price but the quality. If you’re lucky to find a pair of jeans that fits you like a glove and it happens to have a low price, you go girl!

4. Dress your jeans up, not down.

Most Italians start with this thought in their mind when styling jeans – how can I dress them up, how can I make them look elegant? That’s because they know that jeans are an inherently casual piece in their wardrobe, so pairing them with dressier and more structured pieces is the simplest way to elevate your jeans instantly. It could be a blazer, a trench, a button up, a pair of leather shoes, nice jewellery, a beautiful purse, etc.

Think how those pieces would look with your pair of jeans as opposed to a baseball cap, a hoodie, a slouchy non ironed tshirt, a pair of dirty trainers, etc. Of course, you can wear jeans with trainers and a blazer and look amazing, but it’s not going to be the dirty trainers I just mentioned. I hope you get the point I am trying to make. If you don’t just think about this – it’s all about the details!

15 Blue Jeans Outfits From Milan

Now, let’s see those tips I just shared in action. Let’s look at how Italian women style their blue jeans to look gorgeous, stylish, classy, elegant, but sometimes also cool and edgy.

Keep these two points in mind as you scroll through the outfit ideas below:

  1. although the outfit formula might be a classic one, like jeans and a shirt, it’s the details in each piece that make the overall outfit feel new, different, and unique.
  2. not every outfit will look amazing on everyone. That’s not only because of the body type that’s wearing it, but especially about the personality that’s styling it. If it fits the personality and lets it shine, then it will simply look spot on.

Simple Light Blue Jeans & Shirt Look

Light blue jeans outfit idea

The Italian woman in this first look is pairing straight leg light blue jeans slightly flared at the bottom with a short sleeve blue cotton shirt. There’s nothing mind blowing about this outfit but it somewhat works. She has tied everything together with black accessories – black mary jane shoes and a black shoulder bag. She is wearing silver jewellery.

Would you wear this look or is it too simple for you?

Wide Leg Blue Jeans & Shirt Look

If you’d like wearing a similar outfit but prefer it to be more dressed up, try this one instead. Dark blue wide leg jeans, worn with a light blue cotton long sleeve shirt, with the sleeves slightly rolled up, your favorite jewellery, brown boots and either a brown purse or a blue toned one. This one feels more put together and elegant while being simple and very easy to recreate.

Jeans and Black Blazer Look

I might have left my favorite look for last, too bad I currently don’t have a black blazer in my closet. I do have two cropped ones but not an Italian style one. That’s because it’s difficult to find one that fits well and looks high quality, but doesn’t feel too corporate. Maybe this is the outfit that brings me luck!
